How do people go about learning there English Essays. (1 Viewer)

The first paper is in 5 days and im in the process of learning the essays. Do you learn you essay word for word then adjust it? Or do you rather remember the key points and answer the question that way.

I always remember key points and quotes/examples and then write it fresh in the exam.
I think it's easier than memorising an essay, and it's hard to fit a memorised essay to the question. I also find it quicker to remember points as then I just write and don't worry about having the same words as I learnt.

Yeah, I was originally learning them word for word but that was impossible. And ive recently discovered that its far more easier and effective to just learn the points and quotes and adapt them

Secret: Learn at night...dosn even matter if you don't do it thoroughly cause you'll recall it all in the morning.

well for beloning, frankenstein/blade runner, 50th gate the main idea for the essay is usually going to be the same. so what i do is have 3 main ideas. points. examples/quotes. and ive made posters of them and stuck them on my walls, toilet door, shower etc and palm cards and i just pretty much remember them. and then when i get in to the exam, i write my plans on the inside of the booklet and go from there.
but for hamlet, its not always a generic essay which is gay. so hamlet-you just gotta know your stuff. lame.

i haven't written a generic essay for anything, i just make sure i know my points and quotes and everything, and most importantly, understand and analyse what's going on in the text.
it worked for me in the trials!

so i definitely would NOT learn an essay word for word.

this is perfect! i literally thought about this today too

well what i've been doing is...i make my 'generic' essay, then break it down in to parts...

so for belonging, i have my 2 skrzynecki poems and my 2 related texts
so 4 a4 sheets of notes
then ill break them down into smaller sections

then ill read those sections and try to write out that relevant paragraph without looking, in my own words to a specific practice question

I'm doing SOR1. I've learned to write out all the points into short dotpoints. Pretty much every sentence becomes a dot point. Then rather learning it word for word. I just remember each dot point sequentially and then they may get written differently slightly different in the exam but they say the same thing and are a whole lot quicker to memorize

Word for word can be a super bitch, unless you have a good memory and do creative things like yell quote summaries at your dog......

The main point is this, however: if you are going to memorise 90% of an essay and then use it in the exam (as I am), make sure its open-ended enough so that you can adapt the remaining 10% to the question at hand. This may require adjustment of your memorised exam on the fly, which you should also practise. Otherwise you will be up the proverbial creek if a spastic question comes along.
