I think this is a great idea!

So let me start by asking the first question:

Describe the elements of a data flow diagram.
Processes, the action taking place. Denoted as a circle.

Arrow, represents the flow of data. Denoted (obviously) as an arrow.

An external entity. An entity that is separate to the database that provides data or receives data from the database. Denoted as a simple square.

A data store. This is where data, obviously, is stored, and can take the form of either computer or non-computer storage, such as a USB or filing cabinet, respectively. Denoted as an open square.

Hope that's right..

I'll pull a question out of the excel book or something.

What is a schema, and what does it show?

A schema shows the relationships between entinties in a elational database. It can be used to normalise data. It is also known as a ERA diagram. When drawing the diagram, you are to normalise the data and draw the relationships as well as labeling the type (such as one to one, many to one, etc)

More detail is needed,

What is a z modem? and distigush between a x moderm? (posted this question, this was in the old sylabus as it was in the excel book and is it required to be known for the new one?)

Yes it can be called an arrow, however its proper metalanguage name is data flow.

What is a z modem? and distingiush between a X modem?

X-Modem, is a file transfer protocol developed for PC's. It originally supported checksum; however later versions also support CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check).

Z-Modem, is also a file transfer protocol it was developed to rectify the limitations associated with Y-Modem. It is able to support CRC and provide high speed network communication.

Next question:

Biometrics is a device that uses physical charateristics to determine the access rights of the user.

eg 1) Fingerprint scanning

2) Voice recognition

Question: Similarities and differences between internet, intranets and extranets
An intranet, is a private network that uses an interface similar to that of the Internet. Unlike the Internet, it is used to share resources only with a specfic area/ organisation. Another difference of an intranet compared to the Internet is that an intranet needs to apply security methods to ensure their data is safe. One way that the organisation can carry this out is through Firewalls to maintain data flow in both directions.

An extranet, on the other hand is an intranet that is accessible to customers, suppliers or participants of the IS. It is different from an internet and intranet in that it is not yet an easy source of relevant information.

Next Question: Describe client-server architecture and the processes that it undertakes to complete requests.

Client-server architecture is the software relationship between the user and the server. The user sends a request(transmitting) to the server(protocol is first agreed upon) and the server responds(receiving). [feel free to expand on this since I've never studied this]

Question: Describe four types of data validation.

You should have studied Client-Server architecture as it is in the Core of Comm's. Personally, I wouldn't have added anything else except for maybe the protocol is first agreed upon; this is done through the process of "handshaking". *As it indicates to the markers that you know the associated metalanguage.*

Sorry for disturbing the thread, I'll just repost the question so as the next person can answer.

1) When entering postcodes there should be four squares, one for each number ensuring that 5 numbers CAN NOT be entered.
2) list boxs for states
3) When one answer needs to be selected use radio buttons
4) use a seperate field for house number and unit number?
5) no idea
that was a list but u get the point LOL!

That's not quite right. Data validation breaks down into 4 sub-categories of:

Type Check: used to see if the data type is correct e.g. would be pointless having a field called F-name field set as date/time.

Range Check: used to restrict values between given values.

List Check: is used when the data can be compared to a set of accepted data.

Check Digit: is a digit calculated from the digits of a code number and then added to that number as an extra digit.

Describe microwave transmission: Microwave transmission is much faster than that of coaxial cable, UTP or telephone lines. It is sent through the space atmosphere to relay stations normally atop of mountains. Its transmission is carried out through high-speed electromagnetic waves. This tranmission method is reasonably effective in relaying and transmitting messages, however, has a slight disadvantage if the signal being transmitted is to go past buildings and if weather conditions are poor.

The new syllabus doesn't have issues concerning messaging systems, but it has issues concerning communication systems as a whole. So I'll just apply stuff from old+new text book:

- Netiquette - or net etiquette is a term used to describe the proper or ethical behaviour on the Internet. Some rules include SHOUTING, flaming, use of emoticons.
- Privacy
- power and control
- Internet Fraud
- removal of physical bondaries
- Interpersonal issues
- Work and employment issues
- Current and emerging trends

Too much to explain in detail lol

Liquid colour display are like a flat screen with a layer of liquid crystal material placed btwn 2 polarising sheets. They take up alot less room produce no heat and create no radiation

Plasma screens are flat panel displays which use gas. the gas in cells between the panels of glass are electronically turned into plasma which excites phosphors to emit light.

CRT display are those that produce images by firing a stream of electrons onto the inside of a screen wihch is coated with pixels made of phosphor

pooorly explained but u get the drift :)

Describe the different types of system development approaches used in project management
Prototyping - a working model of the system is first created and tested, participants then are able to comment on what else is needed/changes that need to be made to the system. hence makes the system better as its based on the participants needs, also participants are less wary of the new system as they have input into it and are able to understand it better.
Participant development - Solving the problem using people within the IS by participant designed solutions or using tools in an application package to develop a solution using a guided process.

Carrier Sense Multiple Acces / Data Collision (CSMA/CD) is a method used by ethernet-based networks in order to transmit data. First, a node "listens" to the line, in essence checking whether or not something is already being transmitted through the network. If nothing is being transmitted, it will send it's packet. However data colission may occur if two nodes listen at the exact same time and transmit at the exact same time. This is resolved by both nodes "Backing off", holding off their transmissions for a random amount of time before re-transmitting. This is repeated if necessary until data collision ceases to occur.

you also forgot outsourcing + customisation ;)

Outsourcing: is where external specialists are contracted to develop part of the system.

Customisation: is where existing information technology is modified to meet different requirements.

Outline the content of a typical funding management plan.

Outline the content of a typical funding management plan.
A funding management plan aims to ensure the project is developed within budget. It should specify:
- How funds will be allocated to tasks
- Mechanism to ensure money is spent wisely
- Accountability for each tasks budget
- The procedure for reallocating funds during development

Transaction processing system- collect, store, modify and retrieve the daily transactions of a business
Decision support systems- assist people in making decisions by providing information, models, and analysis tools. e.g. expert system is a type of DSS
Management information system- presents basic facts about the performance of the organisation
Office automation system- provide people with effective ways to complete administrative tasks

"Outline two communication control and addressing level protocols"

I can only think of TCP (Trasmision control protocol, Obvious) and IP (internet protocol) being communication control protocols, ive never refered to them by that name though.
As for addressing level protocols, my mind is blank :p?

Anyone care to help?

How do you hack the BOS to maintain a 95+ in IPT? (Attach a Data Flow Diagram to diagramatically represent your answer)
