Judging by this thread: http://community.boredofstudies.org...cs/224764/smacking-child-ever-acceptable.html, most members of this forum believe that the use of physical punishment, when the force used is reasonable and children continue to misbehave in the face of reasoning and other psychological punishments, is beneficial to a child's development.

If a certain punishment is to the benefit of the child, it shouldn't matter who is applying it. Indeed, if it is what is best for children under certain circumstances, it's a disservice to these children if we do not allow teachers the ability to properly mold their character by the appropriate application of physical discipline. If occasional and appropriate physical punishment achieves optimal results when raising children, then surely restricting teachers in using this power when necessary will result in children not reaching their full potential?

We assign teachers with the responsibility to manage and discipline children while they are under their care, in the best manner possible. If physical discipline is the best method for a particular situation, why not grant that right to teachers?

Such an application of discipline is actually relatively safer, and better justified for use by teachers than parents, because the act is public and they are fully accountable. There are checks against it escalating or ever being used without just cause.

Even though they may have the capacity to make reasonable judgments once of school age, emotions will often override reason and children can choose not to listen to reason at any age. If so, physical punishment is an alternative to correct this behaviour.

The traditional use of the cane across the hands may not be appropriate due to physical damage it may cause, obviously a less damaging method will be chosen that has the same psychological result.

Children at school have the capacity to understand what is expected and to respond to more life-like consequences.
Maybe:
Disobedience - detention (plus note to parents)
Inappropriate behaviour towards peers - separation from peers for a time
Continually disruptive - miss out on something fun later
etc.
All done kindly but firmly, with an explanation for why inappropriate behaviour is inappropriate. I believe that if possible, reprimands should be carried out in private between teacher and offending pupil, i am not a fan of the 'let's make an example out of this brat' mentality that some teacher's have.

The decision whether or not a child should be physically punished should be left entirely up to the parents. Some parents prefer not to smack their children, others do, so it should not be up to the school to administer a smack. There are other ways of punishment that work much more effectively at school than they do at home.

since when
many 'normal responsible parents' may be too busy and stressed to deal with their children appropriately and thus not discipline them appropriately causing increased cases of abuse and stuff

think about it

In an institution where all children are by law required to attend school we are taking away the parents choice in how to handle their child's behaviour. Should we really be handing over disciplinary choices for our our children to the state? I don't think it is morally right to strip parents of the right to chose and act against something they personally do not condone.

Is it really productive to teach children behaviours that give the message to use physical violence as a means to control another persons actions when in the real world this does not apply? I think we should be teaching them to behave as functional full grown adults without using physical punishment as a deterrent.

PARENTS SHOULDNT HAVE THE CHOICE THEY ARE PARENTS NOT OWNERS
most parents are actually retarded and cannot make rational decisions regarding their children
which is why the state must make the choices for them

You are a silly kid. If you cannot see that a parent smacking a child is a perfectly acceptable way to discipline them, provided you explain what they did wrong, there is little hope for you. For the benifit of the doubt ill write you off as a troll but seriously, think for a second.

Cane's in schools were (according to the people I know) rarely used responsibly and just as a means to beat the student and inflict fear so that no one would muck up.

Parents have the right to hit their kids, it isnt a freakin abusive rage or beating, just a slap on the hand or arse if it's serious to tell send a clear message of NO! NAUGHTY! Some cunts in schools deserve it I admit, however the issue here is that you still dont see that parents hitting their own children out of an act of discipline is not only acceptable but has occured over generations.

Anyone who isn't shit at life knows how hard they are going to hit, even if they are stressed and busy. In these cases, its possible that it would be even more efficient for the parents, having the matter dealt with quickly.

Even when one parent is stressed and isn't handling a situation porperly, the other parent should be able to step in and handle the situation to take the pressure off the other parent.

So then you are arguing that the state holds ownership of the child rather than the parent?

I guess you're right. Let's hand over all of our choices to the great big nanny state we all love and call home. No need to choose a career. The government says your an electrician. No need to decide what's for dinner tonight. The government will give us our daily rations.

ok now provide some proof to back up your barbaric thoughts

dbd has provided evidence stating that smacking is in no way beneficial for a child

I don't see why you would need to hit a child of school age. Once they're preschool age, 4-5 and are capable of basic comprehension and reason, "smacking" or any other form of physical punishment is ridiculous. Why hit an 8 year old if they're misbehaving? Why hit a 14 year old? They're capable of knowing whether their actions have a consequence, and if they ignore that and decide to break the rules, they should be liable for whichever punishment is fitting. Being hit is not one of these.

I was going to say 'You come on' but then thought better of it...

katie is right

once kids are old enough to comprehend why their actions are wrong, smacking is useless. small kids dont know why what they did was wrong generally, thus explaining it doesnt help. because small children are on par with dogs, a smack in the head will make them associate their previous action with a smack in the head, and they will know not to do it again
