Govt wants ISPs to record browsing history - Communications - News

Internet companies could be forced to track you | News.com.au

THE Federal Government is considering forcing internet providers like Telstra and Optus to keep records of what their customers do online.

The records could include people's web browsing history and emails and be held for several years, according to technology website ZDNet.

At the moment a warrant is needed before an internet service provider can begin logging a user's web browsing history.

The Attorney-General's Department said it was considering adopting a data retention scheme similar to one introduced in Europe after the Madrid train bombings.

Under that directive, passed by the European Union in 2006, telephone and internet companies are forced to log details of communications for up to two years.

Only details about the date and time of each phone call, or each time a user connects to the internet, are collected. The content of each communication is not stored.

However industry sources told ZDNet the scheme being considered by the Australian Government would be more far-reaching and could include tracking each website visited by users.

I can sort of not care about the date/time of my phone calls or each time I connect to the internet, but when the content of what I'm browsing is recorded, that's when I'd put my foot down and say no.

That's stored on your computer, deleting it wont mean anything. If they start recording it then it's stored on the ISP's servers and you can't do shit about it.

Combine this data retention scheme with their Internet censorship system and you've got the trappings of a modern totalitarian state right there. It wouldn't take much for any less than pure government to use it for sinister means as China, Iran, Vietnam, Mayanmar, etc do.

Not to mention the huge economic burden this would place on the ISPs due to the requirement of construction of expensive new pointless data centres.

Oh, and the ISPs themselves retain this data, so huge privacy issues abound (an issue seperate from stupidity of the government having access to this data)

Dude just more importantly, get the fuck out of everyone's business. There is absolutely no logical reason why this should even be a consideration. Get the fuck out.

I have no problems with ISPs having the data...

Coles knows exactly what we buy, when we go shopping, how much we spend (Flybuys)
Same with any loyalty program (Qantas FF, Cinebuzz, Everyday rewards, any credit card)

Companies should be able to collect this data to target better products to our needs/wants.

The problem is when the Gov, with regulatory/disciplinary objectives gets its hand on any of it. Im pretty sure there would be privacy laws preventing them getting the above data... as it should be for internet.

Those are OPTIONAL you fool. And they're also typically far less personal. Nothing about this scheme is opt-in.

Not if it violates our personal privacy. Not if it's not opt-in.

Exactly.
