My attitude is you should keep your desktop in a state of cleanliness that you would be happy to share it at any time. If that involves icons or not is of personal preference.

whenever someone needs to look/use/borrow/whatever my laptop, i simply move all stray files into the blank folder i have.
it just builds up again over time until the next time someone needs my laptop
