Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2016

Can someone tell me. Where/When can I find out what courses are going to be offered in summer school?

Because I'm in a bit of a dillema here. Im doing Advanced Science/Computer Science double degree, and am planning to major in chemsitry in advanced science. Hence, this semester I am doing: SCIF1121, MATH1131, CHEM1031, COMP1917.

However, it's my understanding that before the end of the year, in order to move on in both degrees i need to do: CHEM1041, COMP1927, MATH1231, MATH1081 (discrete), and one PHYS subject (PHYS1111/1121/1131).

Now this means i need to do summer school, so I'm wondering which one I should leave for summer school? And I want to know where i can find information on which of these are available in summer school. I need to know this information before i select my 4 subjects for semester 2.

You could just delay one degree and do the other for the time being. Then you can catch up later with the other degree.

If you really want to do summer school, you should ask each of the schools that your degrees are affiliated with and see what is on offer for summer in 2016. To get an idea, look at the class timetable for previous summers online http://classutil.unsw.edu.au/

I know that COMP1927 runs in the summer usually. I've heard that a lot of people enjoyed it in the summer.

You can do any of those next year. In fact the 2013 version of the handbook for comp sci / science had discrete math in second year T1. I'll be doing that next year.

Anyone,

How is summer school different to regular semesters? Is it good? Bad? Harder?

It's crammed in about half the time. Just imagine doing one of your current courses in about half the time.

However, usually students don't take more than 1 course during summer so it isn't too bad to manage. Think of 6 UoC in summer to be approximately the same style as 12 UoC in sem 1 or 2.

In terms of how good/bad/hard the courses are, it is something that is dependent on the course structure itself during summer and the course convener. Can't really answer any of your questions unless you ask for something related to a specific course.

Depends on the course actually
Our one was crammed into 10 days so it was actually a sixth of the time over a semester. It was about 4 days a week 9-5 and pretty much had assessments within days of each other.

Wow good luck m8.

Overloading with engineering can be hell sometimes. Just make sure you limit your work during important periods, i.e. exam period.

Wow that kind of sucks. Maybe I should do it normally...? It's Chem 1B.

I don't think it's a requirement for my subjects next year, only Chem 1A is, but I think I may be a little disadvantaged since my chem knowledge won't be the best.

Also I'm so indecisive about my timetable. I could fit it into 4 days but I kind of want it spread out, so I don't have things after labs for example and so I have lunch. Of course it doesn't matter since I can go home in breaks...

but do people actually shove all their things on one day so they don't get any breaks for lunch??

Wait. so let me get this straight. If i leave discrete maths to sem1 next year, does that mean i can do second year computing courses or not? I'm happpy to do summer school if not.

I'll have to get it approved first but my wam is a joke :haha:

If i get it approved I'll cut back my hours at work because I want to finish my degree quicker

One in the morning after gym so I'm not sweaty/smelly and once in the evening after uni because I like to wind down
