Today we had a girl that graduated from 24 come back to our school and talk abt her hsc journey

this girl banded 6ed math adv (she got a 93)
what stood out to me specifically was the fact that her yearly + trial results for math adv was 42% (that was the highest she ever got) and was last in the class up until trials
i go to a 300-ranked something where if we get 20 b6 we do a whole school party so the school rank didnt help much

so what im saying is that the whole thing is just absolutely completely bullshit, you dont need to come rank 1st or go to a high ranking school, you just need to lock in for externals

ikr. The ranking system is so stupid and it creates so much unnecessary competition and pressure for people
the whole hsc system is stupid. Like why do we have all the unnecessary scaling, moderation, etc. Like just make it more simple and make it like the other countries where we all do the same exams, same level of subjects, etc

because if u actually get high in the external exam, you will be treated as an outlier compared to ur rank. In my school someone ranked 2nd in chem got 86 exam mark in chem and the first internal ranked person got 73, but because they got a very high external mark, their assessment mark changed to 85. Meanwhile the first internal ranked person got an exam mark in the 70s but because of his high rank he also also got an 86 assessment mark. I think its very rare for your assessment mark to be greater than 2 points lower than your exam mark

Wait but if she ranked really bad in her internals doesn’t that mean that even if she does good she still won’t be able to get high. Example if she ranked last in internals then doesn’t that mean she can only get the lowest mark score in the external exams. Unless everyone just did really good

exactly, for people doing the A Level in UK, they only do one actual exam when they finished learn everything. The only reason this stupid system exist for the HSC and everywhere in Australia is probably to make people come and attend school and take it seriously

She wouldn’t have placed last in internals cuz that was before trials. I don’t think trials can realistically change mark that much so Ifl the ranks are exaggerated

What was her rank after trials? Did she ever say?
Last in class might be an exaggeration.

no shit high ranking doesn’t directly make a difference. That’s confirmable by just searching up how hsc marks work. 😭
You need to do more than lock in for externals basically. If your rank is SHIT you will get dragged down. if she was r1 maybe she would’ve gotten a higher mark

It is not rare at all for your assessment to be 2 points below exam 💀💀💀💀

but I think for a levels they have a normal math level which is like basically adv sort of level and then they have further math or smth which is like ext2. Idk tho but my dad did it in Singapore and it was smth like that
