hey yall i was just wondering wat the ppl were like at wollongong. Im sure most are friendly, but is it very multicultural? Does it consist mainly of surfies or is it mixed? I dont dig surfies all that much so thats why im askin. Also is it easy to find a part time job in the gong?

It's a very mixed environment, it's not predominantly surfie or anything like that at all :) Lots of different cultures, lifestyles, with different organisations on campus for all. Generally it's a pretty decent environment, in my experience at least.

No idea on the job side of things, I'm not from the area and as a result have never tried to get work there. I guess it's much like any other sizeable area though, there's probably a job somewhere in there if you look hard enough.

I'm from Goulburn, so I travel up and board through the week then head home on weekends. Where I board is a fair way away from the uni though too, so it does make socialising a little difficult, though I'm not the most sociable person ever in the first place :)

You aren't completely out of the loop or anything though, just because you're not from around there, and there are a lot of events and stuff which will help you meet people from around the area, etc :)

The people is one of the best things about the university. It's not predominantly surfers but rather a very eclectic mix of all types of cultures and interests. It's multicultural without any real culture standing out with a fairly even mix of americans, canadians, europeans, and asians not to mention a large amount of australians. It's a very social university with something always happening which you can get involved in.

I used to commute by car from Manly each day which wasn't too bad considering you'll always be going against peak hour traffic. It doesn't exclude you from much except maybe the glassy, rustys and the like during the night, but those places are just the equivelent of any nightclub in your local area.

I don't know much about the work, but from what i've noticed, it tends to be fairly easy to get a job because a lot of businesses adjust their operations to make the use of the student labour available. Nearly everyone I've met who lives down there holds a part time job so it doesn't seem too hard to obtain employment.

Is ya uncle Maje? However u spell it...

UoW is a pretty cool place, its a lot different to the concrete jungles that are the uni's in sydney, u can sleep on the lawns, and there is a lot of lawn. I sleep on the lawn sometimes. Its good.

People are cool. I know a fair few people who live in different colleges, like at campus east, weerona, i-house, even a couple who used to live in RJC. They seem to enjoy it, its always good to meet new people. One of them actually said that though the colleges are high schoolish, in that the way people group together, there was a common surfing interest in all of them...if that makes sense. Anyways, apply soon. And good luck. Just watch out for Santa. He gets around. Good luck.

Quite simply, everything everyone said about it being easy to find a job disregard unless:
a). you have your licence
b). you have a car
c). you have your RSA

The last one is most important, you can be a waiter then. Otherwise without a car/licence it'll be a hard time finding work. Especially when you have a shitload of other students trying to get the same work you're getting.

Well didnt this thread die. Degenerated from helpful to stupid.

Good luck with your applications. Wollongong is like any place, you have a good proportion of cool people, but u also have the wankers. Maybe we'll be welcoming 2 more if u guys make it in ;) Who knows. Good luck, and i wish u guys all the best.
