geometrically tan Theta represents the gradient of a line.
if the line is y -y(0) = m(x -x(0)); then m is the gradient of the line;
as gradient equal rise/ run, i.e. opposite side/ adjacent = tan(theta);
hence m = tan(theta);

For the trial exams and half yearlies Teachers usually don't put similar types of questions from recent hsc papers (except maybe for Q9 or 10). My advice is to have a go at the 1986 -1992 past papers. It helped me so much that i got 119/120...
first use the remainder theorem, i.e. Q(1)=o, or (x-1) is a factor of Q(x)
therefore: 1+p+q -5 +1 =0
p+q=3
