i know creative writing is important but im just so not good at it. i showed my teacher my creative draft and she didn't have any positive feedback except for my first sentence. the main thing she pointed out was that my writing was very clunky and after editing a few times i still keep getting that feedback. how can i improve my creative writing?

i HATE creative writing so much but here are my tips:

1. writing drills/prompts. they usually turn out shit but something is better than nothing, bonus points if you ask your teacher for feedback

2. read/watch/engage with fiction!! it helps trust

3. suffer

Basically, images that change daily. They are designed to inspire a story, and whilst primarily used for younger people it's still useful. Try incorporating literary techniques into your story. How? Just think up a scene in your head. Now what should the audience feel? see? hear? What sense should you tickle (wrong word but you know what i mean)? Now which technique will help you do that? Like maybe onomatopoeia for sounds, or use a rhythmic sentence to invoke joy, or order. Describe your characters through clothing, facial expression, and body language. Build action until a climax then settle the audience back down.

Read stories to help you draw even more inspiration.

all of the previous answers are true. however chances are you haven't been reading fiction books every month since you were a child. so here's how you exploit the hsc creating writing marking scheme:

have a central metaphor/gimmick that runs through your story. this will need to be based on whatever theme you choose for your story, and it will need to be very obvious. start your story off with the gimmick, then move onto narrative, then bring it back to the gimmick in the middle, then go onto narrative, and then tie it back to the gimmick. the gimmick can be anything from a biblical allusion, an object, a culturally significant thing (they love stories about different cultures), a myth/legend. basically anything. however for it to work, you have to choose an explicit theme e.g. love, family, death, power/corruption. this will typically get you into 17+/20 territory if you do it well.
