Law marks for a first-year student

    Indeed ;)

Law marks for a first-year student

Re: Law Advice (marks) 4 a 1st year For top 6 you'll be wanting a D average It really is not hard to balance D's with extra-curricular activities. Though if you'll be employed then I suppose you have to also factor that in.

Law marks for a first-year student

Re: Law Advice (marks) 4 a 1st year Even with all the extra-curricular activities you plan to do, you should still be aiming for Distinctions (75+). You don't have to work yourself to death to get them. Just do all your readings, attend all your classes, and keep up-to-date notes for your...

    Honours at UNSW

If that proposal is accepted, yes
  6. MoonlightSonata

    Honours at UNSW

Oh, I made a mistake sorry -- it's looking to be based on rankings rather than WAM per se: First-class: top 10% (WAM is usually about 80) Second-class: next 20% (WAM is usually about 75) So first-class is even more exclusive than what I said previously (Edit: Law WAM of course)

    Honours at UNSW

News Update The Academic Board has rejected the purely WAM-based Honours model because there was not enough emphasis on research. A new proposal is being submitted to the Board involving research. According to the student representatives who sit on the Academic Board, it will probably...

Does UNSW have an honours program for law?

There is a thread on that here. .

    Exam Results - Implications

2005. I only have the Semester 1 stats for 2006. No problem. But don't thank me, thank Lazarus - he is the one who shared them with me

    Exam Results - Implications

I have a pass on my record too :P Well I only really want to work in a top tier firm for about 3 years before running off to the bar anyway!

    Exam Results - Implications

    The Semester 2, 2005 distributions for Torts and Contracts 2 are reproduced below. Torts Fails below 40: 2 (1%) Fails above 40: 1 (~0%) Passes: 41 (12%) Credits: 168 (49%) Distinctions: 114 (33%) High Distinctions: 20 (6%) Contracts 2 Fails below 40: 6 (2%) Fails above 40: 0...

    Exam Results - Implications

At least in terms of the top law firms, I respectfully adhere to a somewhat different perspective. I think marks are their top priority. (Baring in mind I am talking about receiving an interview offer, not receiving an actual offer. I think you are correct that the importance of marks radically...

    Exam Results - Implications

I would prefer not to be too specific about my employment, but I will say that half way through this year I applied for the top 6: • Mallesons Stephen Jaques • Allens Arthur Robinson • Freehills • Clayton Utz • Minter Ellison • Blake Dawson Waldron and received interviews for 3 of...

    Approx. law student breakdown?

An intake of 50 CSP recent school leavers per year? That must be wrong I think perhaps they could have said the reverse?

    Exam Results - Implications

Good marks are by far the most important factor in getting an interview. That is not to say extra-curricular activities are not also attractive to employers. But basically you need the marks to get your foot in the door. A distinction average for law subjects is typically decent enough...

    Exam Results - Implications

For the average person it is not easy to get distinctions, but if you study regularly, pay attention, keep up to date with notes and prepare properly, distinctions will generally be the result. Passes are certainly not the norm, and to most law students a pass is akin to a fail. About 20-25%...

Law Program structure - Sydney v UNSW

You should be able to get credit for the Contracts courses you did at UNSW. That is, you won't have to Contracts again at USyd.

    Exam Results - Implications

You'd need statistics to form such a conclusion :) If you're asking about personal experiences, my first semester was the absolute worst of my university marks (3 very low credits and 1 D). In contrast, my second semester of first year was quite good (3 Ds in the 80s, and 1 HD). However I...

    Exam Results - Implications

Yes. You are utterly and royally screwed. You should give up now. You'll never get anywhere in life with those kind of paltry, pathetic marks. Only a complete failure could achieve such a lowly, dismal standard. Throw away your entire career and any prospect of becoming successful. No...

    Mooting - Structuring Submissions

Re: mooting layout It depends on the rules of your competition, but usually most competitions provide for 20 minutes each speaker. So as SC you will have 20 minutes. Some competitions allow you to divide the 40 minute block between SC and JC up to 25 / 15 each. So if you, as SC, feel that you...
