Tips on how to succeed in university

Great advice from everybody already. It's been suggested to me that for every hour of lecture/tutorial/lab, you should study 1 h at home. So 24 units of credit per semester = 24 h of uni per week (for science and engineering) = 24 h of studying per week at home (time spent on doing assigments...

Would this be a good way to get into medicine?

Sounds like a good plan. However, I can't see a problem with doing Adv Sc either. There is no difference doing B Psych or B Adv Sc majoring in Psych - they are essentially the same degree with different names.

University Preferences (Medicine Goal) HELP Desperate!!

Dylanamali and lvella10 have both provided excellent responses so I will keep mine short. Judging by your statement about 'the goal is getting intoMedicine as quickly as possible to minimise fees', B Physiotherapy certainly doesn't help you in this case. You are really left with MedSc at UNSW or...

Enrolling in courses that do not follow your program strucutre?

hmm, I'm pretty sure you can't enrol in first year medicine subjects (which has no prereq) if you are not in the MBBS program, otherwise they will have a lot of random science people doing medicine - but then again I've never tried.

Enrolling in courses that do not follow your program strucutre?

I think it should be fine to enrol in MATH1131 and PHYS1121 in programs like B Science or B Arts. I'm not sure about ENGG1000 because it doesn't seem to be covered by the area of major in Science or Arts. I think you are not really allowed to enrol in subjects in which your program is not...

Anyone going for science at UNSW!! lets be friends

A new generation of little scientists!

    5.5-5.7 GPA in Science Adv.

5.5 to 5.7 is a high credit average. You should be okay if you study consistently and take the assessments really seriously.

Which pathway to get into law is best?

If UNSW Law is your goal then I'd 'risk' it.

    UAC Preferences and Offers

By doing this you are buying more time to make a final decision - do you need this or have you already made up your mind (to go with USyd Liberal study or UNSW Law)? If you have already made up your mind, change the preference now and get on with it. :) For law yep. Make sure you check how...

I am stuck in a hole here help!

Ok, places in MedSc at UNSW/USyd are very competitive so you may not get an offer in the late/final round because there might be no places to give. Your safest bet is to go for it in the main round. Can you try convince your friend to go to the same uni as your original first choice instead of ANU?
  11. Survivor39

Do I have a chance at optom?

They say that to be competitive you need an ATAR of at least 95 and UMAT scores in the mid to high range. Your ATAR is a bit low so make sure you have a Plan B if you don't get an offer (e.g. UNSW BSc, Vision Science Plan and then transfer after 1 year).

    Take the scholarship or not?

J-Wang, if I were you, I would go for Option 1 (USyd) because it is my dream course. Yes you will be letting go of a ~10K scholarship, but to put things into perspective, 10K is not much when you start earning a good salary down the line. All the other bonuses Wollongong offers you (mentorship...

B Medical science vs B Science (adv)

I agree with golgo13. On the other hand, if you don't enjoy biology/medical related stuff offered by BMedSc or BAdv Sc, you probably won't want to do Grad Med or Dent, right? So by choosing BMedSc or BAdv Sc you clearly show some form of interest in the study of medicine and dentistry.

Help me choose my uni peferences! Pharmacy vs Medical Science Ad.

If you want do get into research (like doing experiments to find out the answer to a question you have) then you need further study (PhD). Otherwise, you can do routine diagnostic work at a hospital, a sales representative for biomedical companies, a technical assistant for biomedical companies...

Undergrad USYD COMM + ENG vs UNSW COMM + ENG

Given all of those factors that you have listed, you should go to USyd.

Help me choose my uni peferences! Pharmacy vs Medical Science Ad.

Safraaz, don't give up your dreams just yet. There are many ways of getting into Medicine - all is not lost! I'm sure you'll study hard next year and get the marks you need to apply again.

    Psychology

There are risks involved in doing a single degree and there are risks involveddoing a double degree. Let's think this way, if you do Comm/Sci(psychology) and you don't do well in psychology, you will only have "something to fall back on" if you actually excel in commerce (D/HD average). If you...

B Medical science vs B Science (adv)

GAMSAT only requires a good understanding of first year biology, chemistry and physics. So any of the majors offered by uni would require you to do those basic science courses (so you pretty much have the GAMSAT covered once you've completed your first year of uni!). The major/s you pick should...

    The official Medical Science thread

Congrats on getting an excellent ATAR. Both UNSW and USyd require you to do Maths of some sort. e.g. UNSW requires you to do one maths subject called 'Statistics for Life and Social Sciences'. USyd requires you to do two Maths subjects in your first year. I don't think you need to do bridging...

    Psychology

The Honours year generally consists of 2 semesters of research under the supervision of an academic. In most cases you don't do any 'courses' (although in some universities you have to). It's hard to say what the 'averages' are for honours. Most students will graduate either with Honours Class I...
