    Binomial Theorem

    i. Obtain the term independent of x in (2 - x + 3x^2)(1 - 2/x)^9 The term "independent of x" is one that looks like mx^0, where m is a real number. Let's look at the terms in (2 - x + 3x²). We have 2, -x and 3x². To obtain the term "independent of x", we need to multiply 2 by a constant...

    Finding stationary points

    Second: f(x) = x^5 + 1 f'(x) = 5x^4 f"(x) = 20x^3 For this one, you need to check the concavity on both sides of the stationary point (0, 1) in order to determine its nature. <TABLE style="WIDTH: 192pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=256 border=0...

    how would you factor this...

Are you sure you've got the right question there? I don't think it's possible to start off with a cubic and end up with something that will clearly expand into a 4th degree polynomial.

    Trigonometric equations

Yeah, you got b wrong and it followed from there. However, you must show how your derived R and & every time. I know that Margaret Grove fiddles with R = sqrt(a^2 + b^2) and tan& = b/a in Maths In Focus, but it is never acceptable to quote these. As you proceed through the course, you will...

    USYD's 'Degree in a Day'

From the material I got last year: What is the University of Sydney's "Degree in a Day" event? The University of Sydney's "Degree in a Day" features hands-on tutorials, presentations, demonstrations and practical sessions that give you a taste of what you will experience while studying at...

    Trigonometric equations

I think you meant questions in the form of asin@ + bcos@ = Rsin(@ + &) or Rcos(@ + &)? I don't believe in categorising questions, but this is one of the few question-types that you can attack and succeed by following a set of steps every time. Basically, what you need to do is expand the RHS and...

    USYD's 'Degree in a Day'

Just make sure you register early, because the popular options tend to go very quickly. Last year my deputy principal half-heartedly mentioned that the school had nominated the top 15 people in the grade to attend, but said nothing of registration or preferences. Myself and a few friends missed...

    help plz

May I suggest that it will perhaps be wiser to select a related text that you do understand? Also, your Area of Study focus is called "Imaginative Journeys", not Imaginary.

Medentry . HELP ..~ Is it worth it?

I got a total raw mark of 183. I'd say I did alright in the UMAT without having done any prep courses. I submitted MBBS applications to UNSW and UWS, and received interview invitations from both, although I'm sure a high predicted UAI had also helped. I did get dragged along by a friend to a...

    Stumped... (with occaisional updates)

The question tells us that the x-axis, i.e. the line y = 0, is a tangent to the circle x² + y² - 4x - 6y + k = 0. What you need to do is solve the two simulaneously whilst noting that tangential behavious implies discriminant = 0. The solution is behind the spoiler. Also I would recommend...

    Prediction

If all's well, I should hope to be looking at 100 raw. But on the other hand I shouldn't attempt to shoot myself in the foot - you can never be too sure about questions that are worth 7-8 marks, so I'd say 95+ raw is a reasonably conservative prediction.

Medentry . HELP ..~ Is it worth it?

I agree, the effectiveness of any preparation material depends on how well it is used by the individual. Because UMAT isn't based on any set content, the only thing that you can do in preparation is to familiarise yourself with the format. I personally don't think it is necessary to purchase...

    UWS MBBS Interviews

I wasn't expecting invitations to be sent out this early. Has everyone else got one?

    Post up Estimate Marks!

In Q5 a) ii, I forgot to subtract P(6 yellow, 0 red)... so I got 0.33 rather than 0.32. I'm really hating myself right now. 120/120 was this close. AARRGGHH! Goodbye T.G.Room medal. Meh. So according to Terry Lee, 118-119 depending on how many marks they want to deduct for that.

    Option: Industrial Chemistry

Same here, but the question specified a temperature of 373K - which is higher than SLC. The equilibrium constant is affected by temperature so how much influence would that have on the value of our calculation?

    Industrial Chemistry (Equilibrium model)

I thought about making up some ball-stick "model" since I don't remember doing anything other than watch a video of people dancing. Then I looked at part ii) which asked for a risk involved. I considered saying people might be stupid enough to swallow the balls and suffocate themselves but it...

    Multiple Choice Answers

I fell in the same trap for Q10 - put D because I forgot to subtract 90 from 900. But otherwise 14/15 according to you guys. Phew.

    Answers To Difficult Questions

Well I do hope it is a catalyst, because other sources are convincing me that it is an initiator. I think Q15 might have been one of those questions with 2 right answers, one of which a bit more right than the other. About flame test - HCl contains no metal ions so flame test can't identify...

General Thoughts - English Adv Paper 2

I agree with the general view that this year's paper was surprisingly easy. Someone said earlier that they couldn't help smiling during reading time - I felt that, too, but only in relief that BOS had retreated from last year's route. I was also a bit surprised to see the request for three...
