Looking for a laptop that likes being used over 10 hours a day..?

No they don't. This is stupid too.

how fast can you type? how did you learn?

Despite having access to a computer since I was six, I learnt to touch type a few months ago. With my modified hunt and peck four fingered method, I could maintain around 35wpm. Now I've taught myself to touch type, I'm at 55-60wpm, but pretty slow on non-letters still. Learnt with Typer Shark...

would you stop buying hard copies of books and download them off the net?

You've obviously never used a proper e-ink reader. They hurt your eyes no more than real text. Making notes is better on an e-reader too. You can write them in, and highlight, then turn them off if they're in your way. I'm not sure why you'd want to print an entire book though, so I think that's...

    Tech Drawing Board

Flexible. I'm leaning towards going through with Mechanical, Mechatronic or Aerospace at the moment though.

would you stop buying hard copies of books and download them off the net?

That's a stupid argument. Of course you have to boot up an Iphone or an Ipad. It's just most people leave them in a power saving hibernation mode most of the time instead, which can be done with a computer as well.

    Tech Drawing Board

I have one. Is there any point taking it to Sydney with me, or is everything (required) to be done by CAD now?

    Netbooks for uni

While you both just sound like bitchy geeks, unfortunately for you SnowFox, the other guy's right. What do you think they do in those years at uni? They don't just dick around. After your few years in the workplace, he'll probably come straight out of uni at the same level as you, if not (and...

How Intelligent are you? [Post IQ results here]

148 = IQTest.com 122 = http://www.iqtest.dk/main.swf 130 = INTERNATIONAL HIGH IQ SOCIETY | Iq Tests Not only are these tests probably inaccurate, it's not even what IQ tests were meant for. And "International High IQ Society"? Sounds like a bunch of elitist pr**ks to me.

Looking for a laptop that likes being used over 10 hours a day..?

This is straight out garbage. Apple source their components from the same places as any other manufacturer. The components are of no better quality. The extra cost comes from three things: the case, the OS, and the name. Dx_God, getting a quad core processor running at 1.6 GHz stock, then...

    Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Firefox mainly, but Iron is good too. Just so you know, Iron is just Chromium, but with the Google spyware stripped out. Opera's pretty sweet too. Not installed, but I've used it before. They tend to be pretty innovative at Opera.

    A new laptop.

Because money. It's not that it's difficult to pull apart - it's just screws and clips - just craply designed and a pain in the arse. Why should you need to completely disassemble it just to clean the heatsink of dust? It probably would've cost at least $100 for someone in a shop to do it, if...

    Computer for uni? (Eng UNSW)

Well, the desktop is actually a few years old now. It really doesn't handle AutoCAD 2007, at least the 3D part of it and it's certainly no good for any 3D modelling without some money spent, or probably complete replacement. Just about anything up from a netbook now will be faster than this...

what was your very first computer?

Technically a Vic 20, but I can barely remember it. Our first modern form computer we got in '97. Bit fuzzy on the details (6 at the time) but I think it was something like this: 8x CD Drive <- might be a replacement from the original Pentium II 400 MHz ? 32 Mb Ram 8 or 16 Mb Video 2 or 4.2 GB...

    A new laptop.

My experience with HP laptops (only my sister's) has been horrible. It was overheating, so I went to open it up to clean the heatsink out. You have to COMPLETELY disassemble the thing. I mean COMPLETELY. You have to detach the screen, pull off the top cover (including keyboard and touchpad)...

    Computer for uni? (Eng UNSW)

I'm really not sure which way to go with this. For anyone currently doing a BE (at UNSW in particular) what would be your optimum setup be as far as computers are concerned? I have a desktop I could just take to Sydney with me, or should I get a netbook to go with it, just get a netbook or get...

would you stop buying hard copies of books and download them off the net?

I would definitely still by real books, but I'd like a digital copy with it, or a hard copy with my digital one. You people treating the iPad as a great new invention need to get an education though. It's nothing short of a joke and a publicity stunt.
