    Medical Science and Electives @UNSW

As someone who has gone through BmedSc and fortunately got accepted into Med, I totally agree with Xt. I did MATH1131 in the first year because I wanted to 'learn new stuff' but I regret not choosing MATH1011 to boost my WAM even more - many of my colleagues chose 1011 and got perfect scores...

    UNSW Summer Vacation Research Scholarships

If I recall correctly, the application for these scholarships required a CV as well, which obviously means that the selection criteria consists of more than just the WAM; Summer scholarships which are based solely on WAMs like the ones from SOMS only required submission of the WAM and preferred...

OMG!! Is it true that if u do graduate medicine is better than undergraduate medicine

Re: OMG!! Is it true that if u do graduate medicine is better than undergraduate medi As someone who has taken this pathway at UNSW, I believe there should only be 3 reasons why you would want to take this stream: 1. You didn't make it into MBBS straight out of high school: this pathway keeps...

    Release of Semester2 2012 Results

Of course those combined med students are just as capable, but perhaps their drive/motivation is not as forthcoming; they're basically guaranteed entry by merely maintaining a credit (although it's fair to say they would be aiming higher, but there's no real sense of competition). In Med Sci...

    Release of Semester2 2012 Results

I go to UNSW mate. Another factor may be how marks are allocated - I'm not sure how usyd allocates their marks, but at UNSW the quizzes, midsem and lab assignments are basically giveaways.

    Release of Semester2 2012 Results

With 1st year chem, plenty, I'd say 10+ - I know about 5 people who got 100 in the first sem, second sem or both, and that's only in my degree alone, let alone all the science, adv. science, optometry people etc. With 1st year mathematics the same thing applies if one does really basic maths -...

    Release of Semester2 2012 Results

Haha they're okay, I was actually expecting higher marks for most of the subjects but I'll take it Good luck for your application but if you don't get in, don't worry - marks tend to even up in the 2nd year if you study hard enough because those with 90+ wams (who usually got there by getting...

    Release of Semester2 2012 Results

Nice work on Genetics, that was a killer subject for quite a few people in my cohort. Second year is much better (and easier imo) than ANAT1521. T2 BIOC2201 Principles of Mol. Biol (Adv)....96 HD T2 PATH2201 Processes in Disease.............92 HD T2 PHAR2011 Introductory Pharmacology...

    Tricky Derivative Question

    Area of rectangle = (2x) x e^(-x^2) = 2xe^(-x^2) dA/dx = 2e^(-x^2) + 2x(-2x)e^(-x^2) [chain rule] = 2e^(-x^2) - (4x^2)e^(-x^2) max/min at dA/dx = 0 2e^(-x^2) - (4x^2)e^(-x^2) = 0 e^(-x^2) [2 - 4x^2] = 0 e^(-x^2) cannot = 0 since -x^2 cannot = ln 0...

Had some free time so enjoy, sorry bout the quality had to fit it within size allowed

    Answer to q10 f?

    I think you stuffed up the substitution of 0, instead of 1 you got -1 so hence you ended up with 41/2 - 2ln2 A = Integral of x - x^2 /2 + x^3/3 - ln(1+x) from 0 to 1 = {[x^2 /2 - x^3/6 + x^4/12] - [(1+x)ln(1+x) - (1+x)]} from 0 to 1 = {[1/2 - 1/6 + 1/12)] - [2ln(2) - 2]} - {[0] -...

    Question 9.b.iv was bogus!

You can't have SQ, SR because they are not connected to the power station then: Third line of the question: A cable is to be laid from P to S. Thus the only paths are: 1. P to S 2. PQ + QS 3. PR + RS

    General Thoughts: Mathematics

I honestly thought the exam was pretty easy compared to the past few years, questions 8-10 were much simpler. Question 6 with the rollercoaster was pretty tough but if you understood the question it was no biggy.

    Answer to q10 f?

    Yep got the same :D

    Question 9.b.iv was bogus!

    If you replaced 2.6 with 1.1, you will find that C = $7325 From P to S directly, the cost will be only root 34 x 1100 = $6414 From P to R , S to R , cost = 5(1000) + 3(1100) = $8300 Therefore cheapest route is from P to S

    Rollercoaster Q WTF?

    Gradient of RO = 1.2, which passes through (0,0) y = ax^2 + bx dy/dx = 2ax + b at x = 0, m = 1.2 therefore, 1.2 = 2(a)(0) + b b = 1.2 Gradient of QP = -1.8, and P is (30, y) at x = 30, m = -1.8 therefore, -1.8 = 2(a)(30) + 1.2 -3 = 60a...

    Question 9.b.iv was bogus!

    C = 5000 - 1000x + 2600(x^2 + 9)^1/2 dC/dx = - 1000 + 1300(x^2 + 9)^(-1/2) x 2x = - 1000 + 2600x / (x^2 + 9)^(1/2) min/max at dC/dx = 0 -1000 + 2600x / (x^2 + 9)^(1/2) = 0 -1 + 2.6x / (x^2 + 9)^(1/2) = 0 2.6x...

    Isn't surface area of a cylinder = 2pir^2 + 2pirh So shouldn't dA/dr = 4rpi + 2pih = 4rpi + 2pikr :S
