Try doing "thinking" subjects and "memorizing" subjects alternately.
For example, if you're doing a subject like Biology (a lot of memorizing), you'd follow it with something like Maths (just calculations) so your brain doesn't have to overwork itself to retain...

Try to be understanding. You won't know for sure if your friend is just being melodramatic, or if he's genuinely experiencing such degrees of grief :/ Just watch out for him and see that he doesn't do anything that's too drastic.
