Ancient History is a wonderful subject to learn, mainly since I have an interest in it. However, the exams are brutal: you are required to give evidence for your discussion with ancient and modern historian quotes & archaeological evidence and it's alot to remember, pretty intense too.

Generally, trials are made harder than the actual HSC. It's to prepare you for them.
Consider this, wouldn't you rather fail your trial and be pleasantly surprised at how easy the HSC is compared to them, rather than doing fantastically well in an easy trial...
Cram my little heart out until I feel sleepy, then once I am tired, just sleep and wake up early on the exam day to cram a little more.

As someone in this thread mentioned: maximum marks for minimum effort is how I like to play it.
Well of course you need to memorise SOMETHING.
Personally, just go for what works for you. I like to sum up my techniques, quotes, examples and a few generic thesis' and the rest of the essay I flesh out on the day so I can tailor it to the question.
It's all about finding what works for you...
