    No Money in Law !?

The money in Law may not be that great, but the money in Med isn't that great either in the first few years of employment.

Worth doing JD at Melbourne Uni?

The number of businesses that become wildly successful and few and far between, and you'd need to have a pretty niche market to reach that level of success anyway. Moreover, luck often plays a role - being in the right place at the right time etc. I am sure a lot of very successful...

Worth doing JD at Melbourne Uni?

Now I see how money driven you are, I second the suggestion to study Business. Investment banking is a great place to be if you're after money, but the tradeoff is you have no life. Also bear in mind that law students and lawyers have among the highest rates of depression of any profession.

    JD at Melbourne 2011?

Do a search for it somewhere, it's from a few months ago. There has also been discussion of law firm salaries somewhere on this site itself. Time to get start using those research skills! :P

    JD at Melbourne 2011?

Not sure how competitive it is to get in, or about LSATs, but as a current LLB student I think the rough ballpark figure for grads at top tier commercial law firms is about $65K. Not sure whether these firms would place any premium on the fact you're a JD grad (cf. LLB) or not. Firm Spy | Law...

ANU vs UNSW vs USYD vs Melbourne vs Macquarie finance/commerce?

First up, you need to bear in mind this is a NSW-based site, so the Victorian unis and ANU are going to be under-represented here. I'll give you my 2c worth based on my experience at UniMelb (majored in Finance). Now to the crux of your questions: I think it is true that UniMelb tends to be...

What marks are considered GOOD in law school?

In the end I think what marks are considered good depends on which law school you go to. Melsc corrected my definition of Credit, which was based on what I know to be the range at one other Victorian univeristy (not sure about the rest). My university does not use a 'High Distinction /...

What marks are considered GOOD in law school?

My uni uses a different grading system, but Credit, as I understand it, would be about 60-69. I'd tend to agree with hiphoppresident - you can get a clerkship at a top tier with a low 70s average for law, so I guess with a mid tier high 60s may be sufficient. But certainly try to aim for a...

    Another law dropout >.<

Medicine is a noble profession and is seen as fairly prestigious, but comparatively speaking, it is not that highly paid a profession. So I say: For prestige, do Medicine. For money, do Finance then do Investment Banking, which is pretty prestigious too among those in the know. But bankers...

    Articled clerkship positions

Check firmspy for insider info on salaries - they have salary info for most of the Big 6 there.

Does the other degree in the double degree component matter?

I'd second that - when I did a clerkship at one of the top tier commercial law firms, I'd say about 80% of the seasonal clerks were Arts/Law students, with only a handful of Comm/Law students. A lot of the grads I met had done Arts/Law at uni too. That said, I think Comm/Law is the way to go...

careers in law other than lawyer

Melbourne High may not be a Melbourne Grammar or Scotch College in terms of prestige, but it is certainly a good school whose name carries significant weight. On what basis are you suggesting that Melb High is not a 'proper school', and which schools constitute 'proper schools' to you?

    Graduate Positions 2011

I've seen both sides of the coin (law and banking) and I largely agree with most of what has been said already - law can be a vague 'talkfest', banking is more competitive. And DKF can totally chill - you seem to have a strong CV, extracurricular experience and good marks, so flamearrows was...

Job prospects for Deakin v. Monash law graduates?

I think you should really consider whether you're interested in working at a commercial law firm to start off with. Speak to people about it and ask them to tell you candidly what their job is like, whether they enjoy it and so on. Now if you do decide to pursue this path, then I think if you...

    Summer clerkships 2009/2010

In Victoria at least, up until this year or last year, law students could do an articled clerkship ('articles') after graduating from uni. As I understand it, this involves getting legal experience at a law firm (basically full time work), and at the end of the 1 year period you can qualify as a...

    Summer clerkships 2009/2010

Freehills churns out their rejections pretty quickly because they're very marks-focussed.

    Banking internships 2009/10

Congrats to everyone who got offers, and better luck next time to those who missed out. Does anyone have the numbers for IBD? How many IBD people were taken by each firm in Sydney?

    Favourite brand of shoes?

Nike Shox - been wearing them for the past few years and love them. Very comfortable! Not suitable to wear to some places though, they don't look very classy.

    Banking internships 2009/10

Different banks have different timelines. CS offered 2 in Melbourne, and allowed I think a bit less than a week to accept.

    Study Chinese

You haven't specified in your profile whether you have done or are still doing your HSC, and when. If you're still at uni, you can do an exchange program to China - I'd recommend Beijing over any other city because they speak Putonghua there (i.e. Mandarin, the national language) rather than one...
