ATAR for engineering or computing science ; think I need to drop one of my subjects to work on english - think maybe Chem as its so much work! Any thoughts?

I am new to the NSW HSC system and I still dont completly understand school rankings and where I sit and how it all works - but just got back assessment marks and where I sit at the moment am in a school that ranks quite well and within I totally stuffed english advanced which I am really poor...

I am reasonably new to NSW ( from the US) really finding english here tough - got my rankings so far - dont understand why they are so important - apparently my school does quite well and my rankings so far after 2 assesments are last in english advanced ( out of 40 students) top 10 out of 30...

I want to do electrical or mechanical engineering not civil... will check with the uni re the prereq as I probably would do better at chem than physics issue for me is I am going to have argue real hard to go down to 10 units as its against school policy...
