    Transfer

Hi :) 1. You can study computer science units even if you're not doing a computer science degree/similar. 2. Yes, it's a bit funky - the degree is 'Science', but the computer science major is administrated by the Faculty of Eng (if I have my understanding correct). In either case, after you...

    UNSW chit chat thread

Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2016 There's always plenty of alcohol at the CSE first year camp, supplied by the society :> There's a dance party on the second night and that's when people get sloshed on said alcohol (source: was an attendee one year & then camp leader the next year)

What language did you learn first?

Seconding this! I started with C and I would've had a much nicer time if I'd started off with Python. I don't regret learning C first, but I do recommend to people that they start with Python. There're also a lot of open source libraries for Python that let you do really cool things (websites...

    NICTA Scholarship Interviews 2016

I applied for the NICTA UG Research scholarship a few years back (2012), so I'm not sure whether this answer is going to be all that helpful. But I received an interview offer on the 9th of November for an interview on the 22nd.

    requirements for co-op

There have been 10 - 13 actuarial coop students for each year from 2013. I'd guess it'd be around the same number for next year.

    requirements for co-op

Sorry, I wasn't clear about why I was lumping the two together. I say less worth it because: tech companies generally pay more for internships than co op does; (in terms of hourly rates) from what I can see it's easier for CS/SENG students to get internships/work experience outside of coop...

    requirements for co-op

Haha, thanks. I'm not 'back' per se, I just check this every so often

    requirements for co-op

Coop's worth it for people doing actuarial studies/other business degrees. Less so for computer science/software engineering; and I'm not sure about the other engineering degrees.

    Request to waive prerequisites

Sri can take some time to reply, so don't worry too much...yet ;P

    Request to waive prerequisites

That sort of sounds like something I'd say. Maybe it wasn't, but yeah, COMP2121 is one of the core courses whose prerequisites you can get waived. I haven't heard of anyone waiving the COMP1917 requirement for COMP1927 (in my two years @ CSE). You could try and ask the lecturer though, see how...

CompSci + Media Arts, should I drop?

pointers can take a looooong time to sink in, don't worry (it's normal). I took a while to completely get them - when I finally understood I was so happy :p

    Comp1917

if you also join the Facebook UNSW MathSoc group, they also post useful resources related to the maple test at the end of the semester (as well as worked solutions for the class tests in the maths course notes)

    Comp1917

Friday in the Viola lab - that's odd, on the openlearning page I linked it does say Viola and not Ritchie Theatre. where's it say that it's in Ritchie Theatre? But yeah, definitely in Viola.

    Comp1917

note - COMP1917 next semester isn't with Buckland. what this means - it's probably going to be less 'fun' and less MOOC-y, and run more like a 'normal' course. If you want an example of COMP1917 off-semester you can take a look at last year's COMP1917s2 at...

    Comp1917

yeah, wrong place. Consults are always in labs. Heh. I don't know if there's a syllabus. I know there was in previous years but I've been unable to find one for this year :P I'll let you know if I find one... anyway, while your tutor is a student, she is a tutor for a reason - she wants to...

    Comp1917

Heh, the lecturer is pretty much synonymous with semester 1 COMP1917 here anyway. anyway, yeah, I agree that making people watch online videos isn't the best way to go about things. With respect to course help outside of lectures and the consultation time, that's interesting...the consultations...

    comp1911 vs comp1917

https://www.openlearning.com/courses/99luftballons/ is the URL for this semester's COMP1917. Richard should have told you the activation code in your lectures, or just ask your tutor.

Would a minor in Finance or Information Systems be useful for Computer Science?

as freddiegibbs mentioned, minors aren't compulsory so I wouldn't worry about it. a minor in maths should be possible, could be wrong though. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. again, as freddiegibbs said, a finance/infosys minor isn't really useful for computer science. It might be...
