Cut to the basics, he didn't do that well and ended up with 71 atar, doing Lib Arts and Sciences at USYD currently. How hard would it be for him to transfer into something like Engineering, Architecture or Commerce/Economics? Thanks~

The standard assumption is 97+ atar and a D + Average.

Mathematics or advance science comes to mind. Why not engineering?

Well ofc, it depends on externals too but OP's ranks are all in the lower quartile, coming last in 2 subjects. I go to a rank 40-50 school and even kids in my school who come in the lower quartile of ranks struggle to get above 80.

A school at rank 500 would mean the average mark for subjects would be considerably lower, thus why it's rank 500. One of my friends who graduated last year went to a rank 200~ school and their atar median was around 70-72. Sorry but if you want 80+ at a school ranked 500, you need to come first...

A school rank of 500 ~ would have a very low DA% so I'd say the only band 5-6 subject you're looking at right now is SOR. For every other subject, you're ranked in the lower quartile which isn't too bad but isn't good either. I estimate 62~ to a max of 65~ if you aced the HSC.

For a school rank of 253 and those internal ranks, I'd say your looking at about 72~ give or take. Coming absolute last in mathematics is pretty hefty on your atar.
