help me out everyone

I've got one free elective and, lets be honest with eachother, the choice of electives in semester 2 is limited.

so far I've got Psych 1B but there is one more free elective I dont know what to do with. I would like to do a language, but thats semester 1 stuff. history wouldnt be bad, except UNSW library has bad range of useful books and there is a major report due at the end.

so im not really sure what to do. enrollment is on thursday

so what electives did you guys pick in 1st year and how were they?

Another confused CompSci student^^ *hi-5* I've got 2 electives next semester, and I'm also at a loss at what to do, since our options are really limited.

I've got one for you (another person recommended me): Finite Maths. It's only 3uoc and it's important for computing. You can use the remaining 3 for Gen Ed.

I've got 3 electives and no clue at all for any of them. I'm vaguely considering a maths subject but even then I have 2 to kill.

I'd also have liked to do a language, I wish I had done one this semester, it'd make this easier for one thing...

Wow, what is your degree?

This one sounds good. Actually I think I'll choose it, though it has nothing to do with my degree.

lol, too late.

thx Omium, but Im kind of looking for something outside of engineering (partularly since my last physics lesson was in year 10 ). history, philosophy, science, arts, those kind of electives.

id like to do Finite maths in future, after I do Maths 1B though. and its only 3UoC as well, so it still wouldnt fill up my electives next semester.

I'm doing PSYC 1b though as one of my electives. it looks interesting and has no prerequisites. so you might want to check that out

You might also want to consider doing MATH3411 Information, codes and ciphers at some point (after Finite).

or can we choose whatever we like? (assuming we meet the prerequisites of said course).

it says you can choose what ever you like, you just have to do certain courses that are aimed at your program.

"Also, for each of the specialised programs, some Year 1 elective courses are Recommended, that is, they are suggested Year 1 electives, but any other electives may be chosen in Year 1 without affecting progress in the program."

Ah, that does look good for comp sci. strangely, ive never heard about that course before now. and I only heard about Finite a few days ago. I wonder why...

So, how many maths courses should a comp sci student do? I plan to do 6 (Maths 1A, 1B, discrete, finite, linear algebra, [something undecided]) is that enough?

me too. How about something at cofa? There are not much available in semester 2, but there are some interesting gen eds you might want to consider. "Creative Thinking Processes" (3uoc) sounds nice. Have you consider philo? It goes well with your psych.

We did 1081 so finite should be ok...

Apart from MATH3411 mentioned above, you could have a look at the 3rd year number theory course, Algebraic Techniques in Number theory.

UNSW Handbook Course - Algebraic Techniques in Number Theory - MATH3521

yea, I've had a little look at the courses at cofa and the range doesnt seem too great in 2nd semester. a few of the digital media courses sounded really good, except you need to be enrolled in comp sci/digital media degree to take the course :(

Creative Thinking Processes sounds pretty good. A good compliment to it would be Creative Character Design which also sounds like it would fun to do. I'll probably do one of those in later in my degree when I complete my gen ed courses.

I've had a look at the philosophy courses (particularly PHIL2002 ways of reasoning) and I think that is is the way I'm going to go this semester.
