I personally don't think it will meet surplus, and even if it did I am almost certain that it wouldn't be a big one either.

I am fairly sure that the tax free freshhold will be raised to about ~18k.

And just because I am a Liberal, i want to see less social welfare paid out

True.

The media is going to have the biggest go at Julia Gillard regardless of the budget. If it isn't in surplus the Liberals are going to attack that and so is the public. If welfare is cut (Which i believe child benefits is going to be a target) everyone is going to have a go.

Hence, i also predict this budget will probably be the reason why the liberals get vote in next year

Re: 2012-2013 Budget Predictions

They'll budget for a modest 2012-13 surplus but watch it be whittled away by the time of MYEFO. Final outcome will be deficit. Treasury forecasting is rubbish.

A lot of fancy accounting involved in producing this predicted surplus too. (Bringing forward spending into this financial year, spreading things out over the forward estimates and even beyond etc)

Btw, the 18k threshold was announced ages ago in the carbon tax compensation package.

When there's blood in the water... There is absolutely no way Gillard and Swan could put together the budget that wouldn't see the government take a negative hit. If they cut spending aggressively they'll be told they're neglecting vital services, if they don't they'll be told they are spending recklessly. If they lower taxes they'll be accused of putting upward pressure on interest rates and blowing out the deficit and if they raise them they'll be told they're asking too much off Australian taxpayers. It's hard to see polling get worse after the most recent newspoll so I imagine it'll largely stay the same in the wake of the budget (the budget itself will probably get about 25% approval). This sort of polling will be the proverbial straw that breaks the Prime Minister's leadership, she'll be gone by August I suspect.

There will be a surplus although as Rafy said it is one created by fancy accounting.

'adequate public education' is shorthand for 'thorough socialist training' in lentern's "keynesian" lexicon

Whereas anything short of the complete abolition of income tax constitutes socialism in yours.
