4u math vs 3u math (1 Viewer)

hey guys i need some advice. i do 3u math, 3u eng, physics, drama and textiles in yr 11. for yr 12 i picked 4u math, 3u eng (dropping to 2u after term 1), physics and drama. i moved to a higher selective school this year and it’s been a huge jump—my study methods don’t work here, and no matter how hard i study my marks are below average. math used to be my best but i’ve really dropped, even in ext 1. my tutor said i should reconsider 4u. i only picked 4u partly bc of the scaling (yes i fell for the “60 scales to a 90” myth, but honestly i don’t even think i can hit a 60). it’s just so much effort. should i drop 4u for yr 12? my only worry is if i do, i’ll have to keep 3u eng which i’m not keen on. what do u guys think?

u only need a 50% in the final exam for it to scale well

i didnt expect it to be as bad and didnt see it coming, considering i went to a selective school previously. i somewhat regret moving in yr 11, as its a big jump

Do you think you can do better in advanced math than in 4U? It depends on what aspect of math you’re better in, and whether the time you would save from studying for 4U would assist you in other subjects. Also, how are your 3U English marks? Are they comparable? Does one very obviously contribute to your ATAR better than another?

Might it also be the shock of year 11 that made your performance dip? I know plenty of people who did better in year 12 (my English rank had suffered because of it, haha). I mean I’m biased because I dropped 3U English for 4U math so you can probably tell what my opinion is - honestly though, if maths is more interesting to you than English, your passion in math might just carry you over the line.

doing better in math advanced is really irrelevant. everyone can do better in math advanced, it's literally just year 10 maths

don't worry too much - i experienced something similar when i moved schools from year 10 to year 11; not only is the school enviornment and competition much harder, but ngl year 11 is a big jump from junior years (year 7 - year 10 is chill af in sydney lol). honestly you don't need to do 4u, just ace advanced and do well in ext 1 and it should be fine.

i cant speak for others, but imo healthy competition is a very good driving factor to motivate you to study, and i was very worried that my old cohort would drag me down due to their subpar performance. also id rather do average in a really well ranked school than getting dux in a lower one... just my thoughts

they can't drag u down directly. meanwhile in a selective school they can and will drag you down.

if ur 1st or very far ahead of the rest of the cohort, ur guaranteed ur assessment mark will not be dragged down. at most it'll even be dragged up if someone from the cohort does manage to beat u in the final exam.

u don't need competition, pressure and stress to do well either, that's just a bs psychological reason.

if ur dux, u actually standout.

the way i understand it is that if i'm doing really well in my internals (because my tests are really easy in a low ranked school) but i drop in externals (which is harder than my internals), my whole internal mark is moderated down. yet if i do just average in a highly ranked school and do well in hsc (which seems relatively easier compared to my internal assessments), my internals are moderated up.
hsc is honestly just a game, the system is so weird. also anyone pls correct me if my above info is wrong, this is based on what i've understood about the system over the years
