A beautiful mind and RMF links? (1 Viewer)

I've read RMF and watched the film version of A Beautiful mind and I was wondering what the links between the two texts are in reference to belonging/alienation?
At the moment all I can think of is how both texts show that having a mental illness causing a detachment from reality can also damage the relationships with other people, also how a characters traits are also represented through the friends they have and the environment they are in, with A Beautiful Mind, the main character constructs several characters where he finds belonging with each of those characters, one with friendship (Charles), purpose (The detective, forgot his name) and i'm not sure what role Marcee plays.
This is all I have atm and i'm having a blank mind, I can't seem to find any other connection, could someone whose seen or done A beautiful mind for AOS help me out with RMF?

I think belonging and alienation are ultimately the two sides of the same coin, it really depends on the perspective you are taking. For example, you can argue that yes, having a mental illness might cause someone to be secluded from society, but then at the same time, the alternate reality that they create as a result of their mental illness-i.e. within their own interior worlds, can provide them with a sense of security, refuge, and a sense of personal belonging. I think the best thing you should do is to:

1)re-watch the film again-try to find some links in relation to familial relationships between the two films, the fact you can't remember character's names is highlighting you don't know the film thoroughly enough.

2)Get out your belonging syllabus, and start to deconstruct it, i.e. there is mention of time, of interpersonal relationship, of connections with people, world, places, of individuals challenging or enriching communities, of belonging in terms of individual identity as well as striving for a sense of communal solidarity, and start to extrapolate more ideas from it-i.e. what is the nature of the connection-transient/permanent/ambiguous/familial/, belonging-as a life long journey,
whatort of people-virtual, imaginary, significant individuals-like friends, family, world-again, what sort of world, self-constructed, the real world, the immediate environment, places-start to define the many different types of places

3)When you finish this deconstruction, start to come up with specific ideas relating RMF and the beautiful mind-I think when you start to brainstorm via deconstructing the syllabus rather than just focus on the two text again-it will be easier.

Just one more thing, I think when you say a person's character traits are represented by the people and environment-it is not exactly particularly evident in RMF and I don't think it is a very strong point to argue about belonging-particularly by the way you have worded it. I think if you follow the above steps, you will hopefully come up with more specific thesis ideas on both belonging and alienation. Hope this helps and best wishes for your HSC year
