Hello. Now I know you guys probably get many posts like this one, so feel free to click the back button on your toolbar.. =)

Hmm, where should I start?
I don't know if this is right forum I should be posting in - I've never really been to a forum this big before.
I'm in Year 12, this year - 2006. I've never really been a studying type of person. I mean, I've survived ok. I received my School Certificate (Band 4s, with a Band 5 in History of all subjects), and naturally continued into my senior years. Well now the end is really approaching. Believe it or not, only recently have I began thinking - where now? I'd always thought 'university or something', but never really put much thought into it. A few months ago I attended a 'Careers Workshop', and had a look at some of these possible universities. I finally started looking at courses and UAIs. This concept scared the hell out of me. Of my 17 years on this planet, I've been going to school for 13 of them. After this year, I have nothing, and my next steps all come down to this number?

I began thinking - Engineering! How exciting! I've always been interested in the enviornment and conservation, and thought that there's no better way of helping and understanding than 'Enviornmental Engineering'. Maybe combine that with a 'Civil' degree and there's no limit to what I can do. That lasted a little while, but then I came to my senses and realised there isn't much of a future in engineering with General Maths (I used to do 2unit Maths, but I dropped down).

So now my thinking is fixed on an 'Arts' degree. It sounds like me. I have an interest in Philosophy. University Of New South Wales. Last year's cut off - 75.

I'm sure that's achievable, right? Remember how I said I haven't really been a 'studying person'? Well I wasn't lying.

My HSC subjects:
  • English Advanced
  • General Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology (Yes, that's 3 sciences. I must of been high. Nothing else was on that line, seriously.)
  • Software Design & Development (I was first in my school for Computing Studies in Year 10 so it was a natural choice. Too bad nobody told me it was shit.)

My assessment tasks have all been average. I thought the rankings were thrown in there for fun. I've missed a few, and performed badly in half-yearlies. I'm not proud. One thing I don't understand, what about my Year 11 assessments? Don't they cound towards my HSC? My school ranking.. who knows? Probably doesn't have a ranking. Doesn't deserve one either. Rooty Hill High School, in the western suburbs.

I guess my point is, does my future lie at university? Is 75+ achievable considering my situation (bear in mind my motivation has since increased dramatically..)? Is 60+ achievable? UWS's UAI cutoff is 60. (UWS has a lower repuatation, even in the western suburbs..)

Well if you've made it this far you might as well reply. Call me a westie. Maybe help me. It's up to you, and I thank you in advance.

=D

welcome
um, ok if you want replies, please bold the important bits. :p for example, don't bold the first paragraph. but i skimmed it all anyway ;)

my general advice is to imagine the distribution of uais from last year, imagine where you sit in that distribution and that will give you an estimate of your mark. so if your school got uais from 70-90 and you're average, you'd get about an 80.

and my next piece of advice is to do your best. you have good subjects, by working hard for the rest of the year you have nothing to lose.

no year 11 does not count. from memory school rank doesn't matter either but people talk about it because it gives you an idea of where the marks of your school lie in relation to the rest of the state.

i think you have made the right decision re: engineering. there is a lot of maths (and subjects like chem, physics, mechanics, statistics which are maths by another name) and it is quite hard. i got 70 in 2 unit and have just scrapped my univeristy maths. with little maths background (ie not knowing differentiation and integration) you be badly behind from day one.

with all the science you are doing if you can do well you should easily get 75 as they aren't soft subjects. i rckon with that background you should consider a science degree.

the skills you learn will make you more employable than an arts graduate, unless you really want to be a teacher, and academic or do grad law. remember the old joke BA = bachelor of attendance.........

i know it sounds harsh but theres no point going to uni if you're not gonna have a well paying job at the end of it. then again no point in staying in to school to year twelve unless you go to uni. better get studying! :)

I've paid my dues -
Time after time -
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I've come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls -
You brought me fame and fortuen and everything that goes with it
-
I thank you all -

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I ain't gonna lose -

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

I read through all that, not sure what you want to know. If you want someone to tell you what to do next, then I can help you. NSW Government told you to do K-12, and now it's your chance to do what you want. You're not limited by the UAI, remember that, I would suggest a career in nursing. (It's not gay or anything serious, alot of male nurses were other things in the past, its cut-off is really low and pays real good money after 5-6 years.) Also, another Option is Policing, which seems more your type. It's cut-off is relatively low, it's in demand, and has 'great' opportunities for promotion. eg(Captain. etc etc).

I may be wrong, but they're both respectable heroes of society who get payed relatively well. They also involve dealing with people which is your strength and are not much of an ask of you if you pull together and get better HSC marks/ranks.

Good Luck 'Cunt-stable' Riley, or Nurse Riley. (it's not gay yo, lol)

Does the fact that only a small amount of people are enrolled in my courses help - ignoring my place in the ranking?

English Advanced .. 17 people
Software Design .. 9 people
Biology .. 18 people
Physics .. 12 people
Chemistry .. 7 people
General Maths .. 52 people

hey ^ i hope not... onli 5 ppl do phyics in mine, and 6 do bio.
i guess it depends on the performance of theppl in ur class. i.e. if you are coming last, however the 49 ppl that are in front of you are all gettin 99, then you wouldnt get draged down or anything.

If that makes sense... :)
