If you do an Accounting major, then yes its a good paying job and has very good prospects. Accounting is a very broad major though, and u can become business managers, taxation specialists, auditors and etc, you dont just crunch numbers for the rest of your life

Most uni's starting salaries for accounting graduates start at around the 35k mark

Accounting is good because it allows you to gain an insight into all aspects of the business operations. The bad side is that Accounting, IMO is really boring (in the first year at least) and you have to put up with it.

BTW. 35K for a starting salary isn't low at all. What do you want? 100K straight out? :p

thanks for that boys

35 k is pretty damn low considering if i was 2 become a teacer, they get paid around 45k from start, but then it will only increase by about $2 p/a after 50 years of teaching.

LOL

You wanna do economics? I heard its kinda hard, but I guess if you have an interest in it then you'll probably be fine. I'm having enough trouble with Economics for Business and its supposed to be a first year, first semester subject >.<.

Does your course have a 2nd major? Or it is just combined together with Law?

but sooooooo many ppl are doing accounting in uni..

won't that mean there will be a huge influx of accounting graudates, which means the competition for jobs will be crazy?

erm well i'm doing accounting now, but only because it fitted nicely into my timetable giving me a 4 day weekend. i've learnt my lesson and will never touch accounting voluntarily again.

1st year accounting is also compulsory for some degrees, it doesn't mean the students will major in it or become accountants

well, accounting will always have better job prospects, because there are always jobs out there (but they can be the bottom of the bottom)
Eco's have a bigger unemployment rate upon graduation, but if you get a job, its likely to be a good one, and promotion rates are the highest out of any degree (i read that in a UNSW economics brouchure!)

well, as the graduate employment figures show (from Good Uni Guide), that huge influx is met with huge demand for them

i find economics easier to understand (weird, i know). accounting is dry-er than ecos.

hehe the forces of demand and supply at work! see - ecos is useful, even when comparing whether ecos or accting is better :)

reminds me of the maths i had to basically 'relearn' for economics... why slope of MR = twice slope of D for monopoly... here it goes:

For demand:
P = a - bQ
TR = P x Q
.'. TR = (a - bQ) x Q = aQ - bQ^2

Since dTR/dQ = MR (MR is the slope of TR),
Then, MR = a - 2bQ

Therefore it can be observed that the relationship between MR and D is:

MR has twice the slope of D (2bQ v bQ)

and

Both begin at the same y-intercept, a.

stupid maths :(
