Hey, when writing legal essays, are you supposed to use active or passive voice

and if so, how do you apply the concept of either active or passive voice to legal studies essays?

When writing any essay, use active voice.

Example: "The Bail Amendment Act 2007 NSW ineffectively protects the rights of young offenders" as opposed to "the rights of young offenders are ineffectively protected by the Bail Amendment Act 2007 NSW"

The former sentence is the better sentence.
