It seems that this new degree is an initiative by UNSW to ensure that the university and its students remain up-to-date with important technological changes and advancements, which is important since technology is constantly changing and improving. This is evident given that you can specialise in any one of the following areas:
  • Computer Science
  • Security Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence
All of these fields experience changes and advancements, especially ones like AI. Based on this, it would be reasonable to suggest that studying this degree would equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills, allowing you to pursue a career in any one of these fields. Of course, to ensure positive outcomes, you will need to do your utmost to perform favourably. This essentially covers the industry-oriented aspect of the degree, which would be relevant to most students studying it.

The other aspect of this degree is the research-related pathways and opportunities that it provides. Since this degree includes an Honours year, you will be able to complete an Honours thesis in which you present extensive research covering a relevant area of interest. Should you perform well, and if you have an interest in pursuing an academic career, you would be able to undertake postgraduate study (such as a PhD).

I hope this helps! :D
