NOTE TO MODS (I dunno if u think this is :spam:, at least i dont :p, but if u do, then move it ...just dont delete it!)

For all you current 04'ers if you are not sure what uni to go to next year, then this is for you to read for starters!
This extract was taken from The Department Of Education, Science and Training. It is a 3rd party (therefore unbiased :p) account of the University, its features, reputation and excellent facilities.

http://www.dest.gov.au/tenfields/health/3uow.html

The University of Wollongong (UOW) takes great pride in the remarkable position it now holds in the higher education sector - nationally and internationally. Its enviable reputation for excellence in teaching and research draws talented students and resident and visiting academics from around Australia and more than 70 nations.

UOW is the first Australian university to win consecutive Australian University of the Year Awards - in 1999-2000 for Outstanding Research and Development Partnerships, and in 2000-2001 for Preparing Graduates for the E-World.

The Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Health and Behavioural Sciences, Informatics, Law and Science constitute the academic structure of the university.

UOW is one of the largest sites of information technology and telecommunications research in the Southern Hemisphere. Diverse areas of expertise also includes superconductors, intelligent polymers, steel processing and products, welding and welded structures, microwave technology, smart foods, policy development, biomedical research, medical radiation physics, multimedia, and environment research.

The University emphasises flexibility and market-relevance in its programs. UOW intentionally remains mid-sized (around 14,000 students) to provide a personal approach in its partnerships with students, industry and government.

Students are actively encouraged to develop skills in problem solving, information technology, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and importantly, learning-for-life, to support them in their professional development.

UOW conducts highly successful student exchange and study abroad programs. Exchange links connect Wollongong with universities in the United States, Britain, Europe and South East Asia.

Double degree programs offer maximum flexibility so students can pursue their main interests while, at the same time, enhancing their career possibilities. Students can also take summer session courses on top of their normal course load, as an opportunity to complete their degree earlier or take additional subjects, which again might enhance their career opportunities.

The university has satellite campuses operating in Sydney, Nowra, Batemans Bay, Bega, Oatley*, Moss Vale* and offshore in Dubai. * From 2002.

The Wollongong University College (WUC) also offers a range of certificates and diplomas in English language and academic studies.

UOW is only minutes from the heart of Wollongong, a multicultural city of 300,000 blessed with an array of beaches, just 60 minutes from Sydney Airport and 75 minutes from downtown Sydney.

Situated between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the leafy campus offers an ideal study environment.

This is my opinion on UOW, i go there.

UOW has a very good reputation on the engineering side.
It have been invited to join the Go8 based on that.
UOW formula SAE slaughtered the UNSW one :p

UOW has particilarly good industry links, ie with BHP, Nortel networks, cisco, etc...

HOWEVER....

not too much can be said about uow's other faculties.....
They are good, but i don't think they can compare to the top uni's in Australia.

eg. for law degree it is best to do it in sydney since sydney has many links with top law firms. However, if you can't get the 99.6 to get in or don't have to $10k a year. UOW is an option.

For computer science, UOW isn't too good either. Recently, there has been a restructure of the CS department. As a result we have rather poor lecturers for the CS courses. Anyone at uow will agree with me.

For Art's, commerce, etc. i can't really comment since I don't know much about it. To my experience it can be classed at good but not excelent.

Science isn't too great at UOW either, the physics department recently got desolved into engineering, lol
Health and behavioural sciences are good though, thus the attempt to create medicine course.

What you really should be considering when going to UOW is the low population, Thus the ablility to contact academic regularly. Also, wollongong uni has a **MUCH** better campus environmentally compared to UNSW, USYD, etc...

That's about it, now it is up to you wheter you want to go to uow :)

UTS's communications degrees completely own wollongongs..... actually they are supposed to be better than everyones, with CSU Bathurst perhaps an equal.

But I think Wollongong would be a good uni. It was one of my preferences, and I've heard from a lot of people who are happy there.

U suck Jm.....Mods delete Jm's post dammit :p

1) Just a little list I have compiled on the top law firms in Australia which UOW has links to!...(I am in the Law Students Society whilst you are not..I am more knowledgeable than you! :p)

Clayton UTZ
Clifford Chance
Minter Ellison
Allens Arthur Robertson
Mallesons Stephen Jaques
(Price Water House Coopers for some wierd reason?)
Corrs Chambers Westgarth
Freehills
Gilbert Tobin

100% EMPLOYMENT RATE DAMMIT! HOW MUCH DO YOU GUYZ WANT??? :)

(I'll stop here.....or I'll be too annoying :p)

2) The Computer Science area is been restructured because they are making the whole campus wireless.....disrupptions in Lectures are only tempoary. :)

3) Commerce is really cool, you have eleven majors to choose from..Last time I read 92% employment rate, on par with USYD/UNSW

4) I have no idea about arts faculty, but I will look into it :p
(One criticism about UOW arts faculty is that it does not offer enuff majors compared to other unis, but i guess that just allows for specialisation, not like UNSW/USYD/UMQ who have 101 majors to choose from. :D)

5) One thing I will agree with you on is that UOW has DA BEST engineering faculty...100% EMPLOYMENT ACROSS ALL TYPES OF ENGINEERING!!!

FINAL SCORE:

SantaSlayer: 1, Jm:0 :D

Ur ugly uni was built for communications, I won't dispute that :p

But your comparing UOW's Communications Degree for what reason?. It is too hard to tell yet, since Communications was only introduced as a degree choie to us this year!
On another note, what courses has your uni introudced to students this year in response to changing employment demand patterns? :p
