The American Civil War was the separation (secession) of the Southern States of America (Confederates) from the Union (Northern States of America). It was sparked through various issues beforehand. This includes the western expansion of the times, where settlers across the frontier were struggling to decide whether to legalise slavery or not. As a result, various demonstrations of bloodshed and violence occured. Such as John Browns assault on Harpers Ferry and Bleeding Kansas. Furthermore, the election of Abe L. pressured the SOutherners to leave the Union as he was opposed to Slavery and once in office he would effectivlely try to limit the expansion of slavery. Sectionalism was the act of one remaining loyal to their own region or section, rather than country. Northern states during the Pre-Civil War era acted as a strong unit against the expansion of slavery because they wanted to remain the most powerful body within Congress and influence government decisions. They had a thriving economy due their industrial nature, and feared if slavery was allowed to expand, all this would weaken as a result. Southern States stayed true to their own racist ideals, and believed states should have more legislative power than federal in a sense that they could decide through sovereignty whether slavery expansion should cease. They also supported slavery from scripture passages within the Bible. Finally, its important to note that Americans on both sides were inherently racist. Northern settlers in new territories didnt want slavery to expand, because it meant blacks would be in close vicinity of the whites. Southerners also would kill and beat slaves for no reason at all and deemed them inferior due to the colour of their skin.
