how do you answer this?

Borate ions assist in buffering seawater at a pH of about 8 in the following equilibrium

H<SUB>3</SUB>BO<SUB>3</SUB> + H<SUB>2</SUB>O < -> H<SUB>2</SUB>BO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>−</SUP> + H<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUP>+</SUP>

Which of the two species above are amphiprotic?

and your rational please :wave:

If my memory serves me correct (and i hope im right), the two amphiprotic species are H2O and H2BO3.
My rational is...H30+ cant accept any hydrogen ions to become H402+ and H3BO3 cant accept any hydrogen ions to become H4BO3

H20 can donate an ion to become OH- and gain to become H30+ and H2BO3- can accept to become H3BO3 and donate to become H+ and BO3-

Hope thats right? :p
