hey just woundering for ancient history essays should i also remember exactly what each writer was?? or is that pointless in an essay cuz markers will already know
so like instead of saying in an essay...

seneca, a statesmen in his time, provided a wealth of information on the 62 AD erruption

Use the second option always until you have to contrast modern and ancient interpretations and need to provide context to make a specific point in each paragraph (which you must do at least once per paragraph). Other than that, just use the second option.

E.g.

Refer to them in passing just to make a point about a particular person or to answer the essay question.

But when you contrast modern and ancient, you should always reference what they were in some way:

"As a man of prominent political standing with the senate, several years after the death of Nero and the principate, Tacitus' infected view of the Julio Claudians stems from an inherrent political bias - given the decline of his political prestige at the hands of Augustus' heirs. This lopsided view of roman politics provides a crass, unrefined and bitter view of x's policy, compared to Modern Historian Charlie Sheen's balanced perspective."
