hi guys, this is my first post, hopefully ppl will end up responding

so basically i have pretty horrible feelings of anxiety and it's holding me back. and i have discussed it with a gp who wants me to come back soon and get properly medicated and see a psychologist and everything. honestly while i really need the help i feel like this whole process of getting help and everything is gonna be too time consuming and what not (i'm prob gonna have to travel loads to see whatever psych will take me, assuming any of them even have spots for me) and i dont know abt these meds and everything bc i heard they make you really sleepy and what not.bc im in y12 and everything im not sre i shuld do trial and error atp. it sounds stupid when i say it like this but should i just accept that its gonna be there and just stick it through? bc what if im taking these meds and i start sleeping through classes or smth, or i start going to see doctors travelling 2 hours back and forth which means ill lose lots of time to study. that's prob gonna make me feel even more anxious than i already am

is there anyone who went through smth similar while in year 12? if so how was it and should i actually go through with this whole psychologist and medication thing?

i'm no person who has been through this sort of things.
Is it okay if I ask what you think is causing it? I mean yh the hsc, but what specific part...getting a high atar or feeling left behind etc?

But other than that I think your health comes first.

I was speaking to some uni students today and they said that hsc is just a step, for some people it's a huge step for their goal (higher atar etc) for others it might not be. It does not mean that the second cannot achieve their end goal. Because many people don't realise how there are soooo many different ways after high school to do what they want to. I'm saying this to justify why your health should come first... as after you get that in check and if it happens affect ur atar... you don't need to worry abt it in the long run.
But coming out of hs with horrible feelings of anxiety and let say that did affect ur atar too. ur coming out with possibly 2 issues yk?

other than that i don't think i'm a reliable source to be listen to...i haven't been through ur experience

don't take anxiety meds unless you have to as a last resort. you become overdependent on the medication and it makes the issue worse when you're off the meds
try your hardest to identify the problem and do whatever you can without medication
^ btw if you're actually diagnosed with something like GAD, you can cop atar points

i mean ive always been very anxious (like gp has noticed it, thats why they were quick to suggest meds and psych) and hsc just amkes it worse

i get your point but i just don't know what to expect from this whole treatment thing. and say i did recover but then it affected my atar anyways..

idk i know i sound stupid but i just want to know how much the treatment thingy affects your school life

ive been through something a little similar and id say do everything you can to help yourself.

I saw a psychologist throughout 11 and 12 and it helped me so much, I applied for provisions for the HSC which helped my anxiety during exam periods. I was hesitant to do this but am very thankful i did. Anxiety held me back as well and once I accepted that I needed support things improved.

You dont have to see a psychologist too often, it can be for an hour once every 2 weeks which doesnt take up that much time. While youre worried about travel time, actually getting support may save you time in the end, it could help you avoid anxiety attacks/panic attacks, procrastinating etc. or mitigate the affect.

Having someone to speak to about your anxiety and the stress of year 12 is hugely beneficial. Theyll be able to provide you with support you need in this time. You also dont have to be medicated if thats not something you want either, you dont even have to continue seeing a psychologist if you find its not working - it doesnt hurt to give it a try?

online psychs are sometimes more affordable/accessible so that could be an option! have you thought about applying for provisions if you think the hsc is contributing to your stress? (idk when the deadline is tho)

i think the deadline is the end of term 1? not 100% sure but @yumyumyum you should apply asap if you can. you actually don't need as thorough of a diagnosis to apply or at least that's what i've heard.

honestly i can't give you a lot of advice but i hope you're alr. you got this bro

i got my provision (small group) applied for super early, i think you just need a letter from a psych or gp or something like that, and it doesn't have to be super detailed.

you got this @yumyumyum !!!

btw -they say the deadline is term 1/2 but i submitted all my paperwork just before trials and was approved. Not sure about the official diagnosis tho but you need someone official to fill out your paperwork (its actually quite a simple process) small group supervision is amazing haha

I think u should go see a psychologist cause it will definitely be beneficial for ur mental health in the long run and should be ur first priority. But regarding the meds I don’t think u should start of with meds first and u should only take them if u really have to.

Imo I feel like some psychologists might just prescribe u meds first as it is the easiest way for them and will fix the problem for a while, but in the long run relying on meds prob isn’t the best for ur health. But I’m not really a qualified psychologist so idk
