Hi there,

Can anyone please help explain this to me.

I have to choose my subjects for Yr 11 and I know all the advice is to pick the subjects that you do well in and like but my question is this....

When I just have a mess with the SAM calculator why is it if I put in my subject selection and just for the hell of it put in my marks of say 75 each - art contributes such a small amount to the UAI like around 30.
Is this because 75 would be considered a low mark for VA - like everyone else is getting above this???

I have to do art - but also want to - to study Graphic Design, but why does it show less contribution to UAI with exactluy the same mark as say Business Studies. The UAI uses your scaled mark doesn't it.

My subjects at the moment are...

English Standard - I do great in Essay's but so suck at Comprehension ahhh!
Visual Arts
Business Studies
Information Process & Techn.
Studies of Religion (1 unit)
Maths
Photography (only for yr 11 and then drop yr 12 cause no UAI)
So 13 units yr 11 and 11 yr 12.

Also - another point - Am I being an idiot for taking up maths. Reason being is I fail maths big time and hate it!!!! But that's because I go to such a sucky school with sucky teachers and next year I'm changing schools. Hoping that there will be decent teachers there - (I got into a school that was on the top 100 list last year) No Joke - our maths class is so bad, kids throwing chairs around the room, that I sit outside in the library (teachers permission) and just go in and ask questions when i need to. But have I fallen behind so much that maybe there is no way I can catch up in yr 11 with basic stuff???:burn:

I don't need the high UAI's that most guys on here are after - I only need a 60 for GD but am still panicking that my education so far has been so lacking that I'm not going to be able to catch up with the rest of the pack.

Any feed pack to this pathetic writer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

PS - Reason for thinking of trying maths - is JUST in case I change my mind and don't want to do GD and to leave my options open

Art is not scaled much so it may seem like a low contribution, but considering what you want to do i would suggest you do it because i could be very useful for you in the future (you enjoy the actual subject and what subject would you do instead?), as for maths, it matters what type of maths, it could be a good idea just to do general maths or you can try two unit for the first 4 or 5 weeks and if you don't like it you can always go down to general, it is always a good idea to do maths if you can because believe it or not maths plays a major part in society.

But no matter what you choose, you will still need to work hard.

75 is considered a low mark for artsy subjects such as VA. if you go well it will contribute as much to your uai as any other subject. but you do have to go quite well. im not sure what you should be getting, just play around with SAM and see.

i encourage you to do arts, if thats what you are strong at and particularly if you want to study graphic design! :)

as for maths, its always good to take up maths subjects. like the other person said, try two unit and if you're struggling, drop back to general. general maths, is quite similar to year 10 adv maths really so you shouldnt hav trouble dropping back if you need to.

also note that english is almost all essays. there is a comprehension component in the hsc exam but advanced and standard students do the exact same comprehension questions so youre probably better off doing advanced if you are good at essays.

Thanks guys for the advice. I think I'm going to take up Maths - I just got back my 1/2 yearly report and scored 40% Grade average 51% that just shows you how terrible this school is! Not a bad mark from someone who sits in the library during Maths Classes!! LOL - No really I'm scared for next year.

I just got 83% in PDHPE and an A - without studying one bit. Should I use this as a guide to take up this subject for year 11???

Also I LOOOOVVVVEEEE photography - but since it has no contribution to UAI - do you think I should forget about it all together. Otherwise if I get to year 11 and find I just can't cope with a particular subject - I'm stuck! Cause I have to drop the Photography at the end of year 11 to bring my units back down to 11. I won't have a 2 unit back up to drop.

Do you think I will get to Year 11 and be shocked by the content of PDHPE in comparision to year 10?

thanks guys - this site and the people on it (most of them) rock!!

do PDHPE in yr 11 and see how you go, but obviously it looks like you can rip this subject into shreds, so take it up and if you dont like it you could always drop it.
if you love photography then do it. Heaps of people did it back at my school for yr 11, so theres no reason why you shuldnt do it, just because it doesnt contribute to your UAI.

Hey so like what is considered a good mark for art? cause i'm taking it in hsc too and i dont want it to lower my uai.
in yr 12 i'm gonna take:
4u maths
4u english
art
biology
at the moment i do pretty good in art. i get like high 80s. is that enough for a good mark in uai?
oh i dont know if i shud take chem or bio. chem scales better but i think its boring.
