Ha! sucker...
The Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs was the only reason I dropped extension. I just finalised it today, so from what I can remember we've done: the nature and the origins of the Spanish conquest and colonisation.
For origins:
  • Isabella, Ferdinand
  • Spanish exploration (Columbus)
  • Charles V
For nature:
  • Reasons for Aztec defeat- military, purpose +desire, disease, religion
  • Legal- papal bulls, requirimiento
  • Encomienda
That's what we've done so far, and our main sources are "Spain in America" (Gibson) and his bigger book, Las Casas, "Cortes' Letters", Sepulveda, and Bernal Diaz.
At the moment the class is looking at context of the writers. Good luck.

You're teacher will probably (hopefully) give you extracts from the two revisionist histories of the Spanish 'conquest' of the Aztecs but if not get your hands on:

- Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest
Matthew Restall (Oxford University Press, 2003)

and

-Empire : How Spain Became a World Power, 1492-1763
Henry Kamen

Kamen challenges the accepted portrayal of the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs which was shaped by Bernal Diaz and Hernan Cortes. He challenges this accepted view by saying:
• The Spanish military success was only made possible by the help of their Native American allies.
• These native allies contribution were largely ignored and forgotten by the Spanish chroniclers.
• There was never any real ‘conquest’ of the Americas for the Spanish never had the men or resources to conquer it. All their settlements were relatively small and vulnerable.
• The Spanish never achieved adequate control over the native population.

“The mere act of exploration became in some measure an act of conquest. In some strange European way of thinking, simply to be there confirmed possession of those territories”. (Kamen)
