I'm keen on doing a B.Arts/B.Laws @ UWS next year..
Anyone have any insight on the course? (in terms of content, etc)

Are you a little worried about the whole negative stigma attached to UWS?

All that talk about future employers discriminating against UWS law grads?

Also, just to let you know, if you attain a band 5/6 in advanced english, you'll be awarded with 10 extra UAI points, so effectively you'll only need a UAI of 80 to be admitted into the course.

5 points, another 5 for legal studies aswell or 5 for being in Greater Western Sydney. But the max is 10 so yeah a UAI of 80ish should get you in, i think it's gone up this year to 93.

Their is alot of negative stigma, besides you can always transfer out to macquarie or uts.

With law grads, you can easily overcome the descrimination in the larger firms by gaining some practical legal training in legal aid, or in work placements, legal clerk jobs, etc.

The reason why I'm in standard is because I just can't be bothered for English, it bores the crap out of me, although I do read a wide range of texts and I do consider myself to be pretty smart, even if I say so myself lol.

So, do you think I'd still be able to do well in the course, or do you think I should just change my aims?

You will get into the law at uws with a uai of even 70 guaranteed. Plenty of people I know have gotten in for around that or even probably less. Hope it doesn't demotivate you much. BTW, I am honestly not kidding about the UAI needed. They state the UAI is 90 but in all fairness, they do that so it looks competitive and good.

Yeah, you can get in with UAI's that low esp for some schools in GWS. But the cut-off has gone up by 3 points.

Nope, they only look at ur uai and if you've done english as long as you get band 5/6 in legal students and are in GWS you should be able to get in with a uai of 83 more or less.

I know friends who bombed english and they are doing alright, but alot of students would have done advanced, etc though. You should be able to pass, it's straight-forward stuff, with a range of assessments from essays to group work, etc.

i have arts/law at UWS as one of my top preferences, but im a little worried about the reputation. the degree looks fantastic, but i keep hearing bad things about the uni...are these legit? or should i ignore them? they offered me a scholarship, so part of me REALLY wants to go there, plus the degree looks good. but i keep getting this niggling feeling that it is crap. can someone put my mind at ease??

From personal experience, the law component of the degree has been great. All my tutors have been excellent and the teaching structure is especially nice. Three hour seminars consisting of a medium sized group sets a better platform for debate and discussion than the normal lecture/tutorial standard in my opinion. The only downside is there's usually only about 4 or 5 students that activley participate.

Havn't done anything for the Arts component yet so i can't comment on that.
