um, well i don't think that anyone can really 'teach' you how to do your designs, that defeats the purpose of.. desigining, and stuff..?

i'm not making much sense. it's like art.. (i know u do art) .. like your teacher just teaches you concepts and guides you, but doesn't really hold your hand and tell you what to do eh..?

i know the design course is pretty general at COFA, if u wanna do a specialised design course, try lookin at UTS, the Design Architecture Building faculty...

Hey i haven't used this forum in ages!
I'm doing B Design @ COFA and its really good, but very time consuming and challenging... (which i guess is good in a way).

Oh and haha to sukiyaki - you said "not sure how they teach but.." and then, "they teach you techniques, but not exactly how the end product is like johnson said.."

Ok... well lets get rid of that myth, of course they teach us techniques, but also how to apply these to our projects, it is a very practical course, and looks at the principles of design which allow you to apply them to any aspect of design which you intend to do. It makes you think conceptually and outside the mainstream... Basically we are given a brief for all the prac subjects, and then we have to design according to the brief. it's hard, but it does make you think.

The core subjects are general yes, but then you choose your electives eg. Graphics/media, textiles, jewellery, environments/ etc.

I'd have a look at the course outline for more info.

Also the campus is pretty small, which i like, you become close to your year, because you see everyone every day and that way you form a close group of friends fairly quickly.

So yeah, if you have any other questions you can always ask.

Have a read of the course outline because that will give you more information than I can - but basically you do core subjects in 1st year including: (1st semester) drawing, computing, modelmaking, typography, design & human functioning, design hist. & theory, and design studio (where you actually are given briefs to design things - 2D and 3D) and (2nd semester) an elective, design & responsible management of the environment, presentation techniques, measured drawing, design & computers and design studio.
In the Studio course - its like the most important one where you are given a brief to analyse, design and make what is asked of you. I dont know about 2nd year but 1st year is very conceptual and the projects really make you think. Its hard, most of the class don't even get what we have to do for the 1st few weeks but after a while it just comes, they make you draw your process alot, draw everything really. Umm... so yeah then you make the projects, using the courses eg modelmaking, typography etc. to come together to help you make the projects. I'm trying to think of an example that you'd understand but its kind of too hard to explain! but check out the course outline. You get alot of assessments, basically there is something due every day of the week, so its full on, but rewarding :)

hey!! hows it going?? yes i have made a return - i totally forgot about this forum after the hsc! Are you doing architecture at sydney? i have a friend doing that course if that's the one you're doing. And no i dont know a girl called helen... or maybe i do and i just can't remember :)
My course has been fun, its just alot of work and i am totally stressed out at the moment, need sleep. Oh its a shame that you don't like your course.. come do my course - alot of the design practice is based on architectural thingys, but then you get to use that knowledge to apply it to other areas of design...
Well i'll speak to you soon i guess!
