Do you need to get 90 to get a band six? As I saw a thread in the Maths area which suggested a 95/120 may get you a band Six, which seems wrong to me.

it is normally the top 10% in the state.. some subjects it is like the top 8% I think too it all depends on the subject

Every test is different and every year is different. It is not 90% is a band 6. Although most times 90% is a band 6. But less the that is also.

All raw exam marks and moderated assessment marks are aligned - experienced teacher judges decide what kind of raw exam mark given by the HSC Markers deserves to be in a Band 6 Category.
82/105, for example in 2004, would get you a band 6 in English Adv.
58-62/84, in 2004, would get you an E4 or 45/50 in Maths Ext 1.
I think for Physics, 81/100 aligns to a Band 6.
That's just a guide though.

So theoretically, if the whole cohort achieves the given cut-off, EVERYONE will get a band 6.

I had a look at my brother's HSC results (from 2003), and the actual lowest HSC Mark is 50... there is a scale they give which shows the percentage of the cohort achieving a certain mark. There was a very high skew towards band 5s, I'm guessing due to the aligning process.

Once I found out about, and understood the aligning of raw marks... I was soooo relieved, since for most of my subjects, whatever I get in my HSC exam... will determine my HSC Mark (due to ranks and the large gaps).

Also some other stats I remember:
Chemistry: 41/100 RAW aligns to 70/100 ALIGNED EXAM MARK
Biology: 83/100 gives you a band 6 (90)
To even pass MX1 (ie 25/50), you just need 15/84

95/120 might just get you a Band 6 in Mathematics but it changes every year. I reckon 98 mark is the safe bar to get Band 6 in Mathematics despite the variations.

lowest mark is 50 in the state? I doubt that's the case. According to BOS statistics from 1980 - 2000, the lowest marks have been either 1/120 or 0/120 in Mathematics.

No Namu, as long as you attend class and sit all examinations/assessment tasks, you receive a mark of 50. That isn't your raw mark, it's just the starting point at which marks are given.

Aligned - 50 is the lowest HSC mark. I even saw it on my brother's HSC results analysis... there was a graph given which showed that the lowest mark was 50.

The above poster is correct, as long as you fulfill the requirements of the course, i.e. complete all assessment tasks, attend all exams etc etc, you will get 50. But remember, even though a 1/120 for mathematics would become 50 HSC Mark if that person had been eligible for a hsc, when it comes to UAI determining, the raw mark is used (ie 1/120)

Lol, I thought you were talking about raw mark. In that case, you are right. But the lowest RAW MARK has been 0/120 or 1/120.

So if for example, your internal mark for maths ext1 was about 34/50 and you were ranked about 14/20... would your aligned mark increase if your cohort did well? What would it do?

If your cohort did well, and there was a larger pool of marks, then the moderated assessment mark would be relatively high. However, whatever you achieve in the exam as a raw mark, is YOUR mark, and is then aligned accordingly.

Band 6 is 90 aligned marks, yes. No clue about raw marks. No one has a clue about raw marks.
