sodium phosphate, Na3PO4, was used in this investigation, predict whether the salt solution will be acidic, basic or neutral. Justify your prediction, including relevant equations in your answer.

Na+ is the caution of a strong base and hence, is negligibly acidic.

PO43- is the anion is a weak acid and hence, is weakly basic.

Hence, Na3PO4 is weakly basic.

Na3PO4(aq)-->3Na^+(aq) + P04^3-(aq)

Since Na^+ is weak cation of a strong base, it has limited acidity

P04^3- is the strong anion of a weak acid, and thus further dissociates:

P04^3-(aq) + H20(l) ---> HP04^2-(aq) + OH^-(aq)

the presence of hydroxide ions makes this salt solution basic.
