The question here is, what are the subjects you would choose (or recommended subjects) for semester one for of the following course:
'BE(Civil Engineering)/BE(Mining Engineering) 3146'

Here is the handbook link for 2014 : http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2014/3146.html

Another question is, in general for the double major of civil and mining engineering, do you do subjects for civil eng + mining eng simulatenously (i.e. do them side by side for the 5 years) or do you usually do subjects for lets say civil engineering for the first 3 years, then the next 2 years you do mining engineering (since the double major is for 5 years)

All help is much appreciated and thanks in advance :)

Depending on your maths performance in HSC, you should choose between MATH1131 or MATH1141.

Same thing for Physics, choose either PHYS1121 or PHYS1131.

I suggest the best thing for you to do is check the availability of the different subjects you get to choose.

Check out the link above from Kaz1, as that will show you a typical course structure and how you should choose your first semester subjects.

Some subjects overlap, so UNSW lets you have the opportunity to meet the requirements of both degrees and receive a double major in engineering.

So for your second question, you don't necessarily do subjects for one or the other. Instead, you do those which overlap and meet the minimum expectations for accreditation by Engineers Australia. You will end up with a double major and in much less time.

In saying that, in terms of electives, there is very little flexibility as you are trying to fit in as many subjects of the two degrees in the 5 years as possible. You get two electives in first year, and they are also very relevant to both mining and civil engineering. However in latter years, you get much less electives in comparison to just a straight Civil degree or Mining degree.
