The dot point: identify that developments in the 1950s led to biotransformation technologies that could produce required organic compounds such as cortisone and sex hormones

As far as I know, biotransformation technologies use micro-organisms to make changes in molecules (like enzyme / substrate). But I cannot find any information about developments in the 1950s. Please help. Thanks.
