cadetships - worth the sacrifice?? (1 Viewer)

ive just been offered an accounting cadetship and they want me to start on the coming monday. although ive only had 3 weeks of uni, i cant imagine giving up uni/social life for full time work . however, if doing a cadetship really pays off im willing to make the sacrifice (maybe for a year anyway ).

im not sure if i want to g into accounting in the future...i would just be doing this cadetship for the experience.

so...are they really that good or will there be other opportunities like this in the average bcom degree??

Take the cadetship, just think about the number of people doing the average bcom degree. If you have experience, you'll get hired easily later on.

personally, i think it mite be worth doing 1 year, but the experience you gain isn't gonna set u apart, cos alot of uni students do internships later on anyway.

u should really weight it up, pros and cons and then decide

it is a massive social life leech, you basically work your 9-5 then any time after is spent at uni and/or studying.. can you do part time uni and cadetship?

Yeh, like everyone else said, there are both sides to it.
Pros: you have money during uni (altho the pay would officially be classified as "shit"); you have experience (whatever people say, experience does count); you have a secured job at the end of the cadetship (well, i'm assuming?)
Cons: it's soooo fucking tiring; uni starts to seem secondary to work, because you're at work all the time and at uni only for a few hours; it's a lot more difficult to concentrate properly on your studies; your social life revolves more around work than uni, etc

That's sorta how I feel. Sometimes, I wanna quit. But then I get paid, and I feel... hey, this ain't so bad. Really, though, I think it's more about what's more important. Uni life or work... cos you'll always (well, most likely) get a job later on, anyway, and you don't need to exhaust yourself working when you should be having fun. On the other hand, it's never too early to start getting experience. So, as you can see, this is becoming more about me expressing my feelings than trying to help you out. So, I'll stop now. Hopefully, I haven't confused you even more...
Anyway, if you can't make up your mind, just go for it... if you don't like it, you can always quit?

You can always try it out, I mean... ultimately, the most you can "lose" is 1 year equivalent of full time uni, because you go back to uni full time for the final 2 years of your degree anyway.

IMO the learning experience you gain on cadetship is miles ahead of the people who come/go for short periods of time because you have the time to develop proper skills, build client contacts, etc... but really, it comes down to whether or not you feel you can balance full time work with part time studies. Some people prefer the uni lifestyle and would like to gain exposure to work but without the full time commitment (in which case maybe pursuing a coop might be a better idea? IIRC they offered more of these at the end of the year for UNSW Accounting coop).
