Chemistry rank as of half yearlies was 64/90 and my mark was 79. I've still got a prac (on monday) and trials to go, which counts for 58% of my school mark. However, I'm struggling to get good marks on essay questions, so I'm guessing my mark will drop.

My school tends to do well in chemistry because of the accelerant program (which I'm part of) and every year I've been there we've had at least one, and in most cases more, state ranking.

What are my chances of getting a band 5?

If you're getting 79 you will get a mid to high band 5. Depending on whether your school's assessments are hard.
Go as well as you can in trials and then report what you got and what paper it was and we'll let you know.

Let's say that after my trials my mark dropped to 70? Would I still be band 5?

I think you have a well chance of getting band 5, 79 or even 70+ should give you that band 5, and if your school performs that well each year, you could expect a 85+ in chem, provided you keep the marks high and 58% is a lot, so much could change, just try hard, pracs are easy btw, aim for 100%

They're easy if you enjoy the subject material. I find the subject matter of the chemistry course mind numbingly boring and as such I find it incredibly hard to force myself to study it to the extent that this weekend I've probably done a total of 10 minutes of chem study, even though I have a test tomorrow morning.

not bad, but yes it happens, why did you accelerate chem if that was the case?

I find hsc chem 100x better than prelim tho, doubt thats the case for you, and seriously, just do it, wont harm you.

I absolutely loved junior science, and so I thought it would be like that all the way through high school.

The thing I don't like about chemistry is the ridiculous long response questions that are more about the effect that science has on society than about science itself. Also, my teachers for the past 2 years have always focused on teaching us so that we can do well in the HSC rather than teaching us how to do well in science. I'm guessing that the Physics course is more or less the same as this, but I've got a teacher that has a PhD and focuses more on teaching us how to do calculations and whatnot rather than how to answer a HSC long response question perfectly, so I'm actually enjoying that.
