Hey guys,
Im doing commerce/law at unsw and am in 2nd yr 2015.

Im thinking about becoming a corporate lawyer, and was confused what to major in.
Its between finance and accounting.

What do you guys think would be more beneficial?

"Corporate lawyer" is a very general term thrown around by comm/law students to describe their aspiration of "working as a lawyer in a business", without actually knowing the details of what it is they want to be doing. For example, you could be doing dispute resolution, mergers & acquisitions, work on the capital markets, insurance law, foreign investment, corporate governance, trade law, administration law, employment law, private equity, conveyancey... the list is very vast as to what a "corporate lawyer" would be able to do.

Assumedly you are probably looking at something to do with private equity/investment/capital markets (most people who say they want to be a "corporate lawyer" mean this), so I would suggest doing a finance major. In the long run though, probably won't really matter as much since you will be navigating the legal system surrounding those areas, rather than actually managing the funds themselves (this would be closer to the job of a financial manager).

Elaborating on what Crobat said, if you can't become a corporate lawyer straight away or in the lead up to becoming one (say for experience) what type of work do you want to do in that case? Maybe use that as an idea as to what major to decide (after all if you choose the major you like then you should find it ok to cope with the work and find it interesting).

Do keep in mind that the job market is getting tougher and tougher and a lot of people do end up settling for roles which they find as easy to settle into despite not being their original plan.
