Okay so heres the go..

Ive heard recently that if you rank number one internally in a specific subject, then the top external mark (whether it be you or anyone else who gets it) goes to this number one ranked person.

If this is true, there are two questions that I have for any of you to answer..

Firstly, how is this even fair..?

And secondly, the two guys that ranked number one and two internally last year at my school for physics did not get a band 6 overall but the two guys who ranked third and fourth internally did..? Is this not contradictory..?

Its fair, that student performed consistently throughout the year. However in the HSC they might of suffered from a misadventure which hindered their performance.

It is because the HSC final mark is divided into 2 equally weighted components, that is, the school mark and the exam mark.
The exam mark is the mark you get in the actual hsc exam, while the school mark is the mark you attain from your school assessments which is then moderated depending on the performance of the whole cohort.

If someone is ranked one, they will take the highest assessment mark in the cohort.

So in a class of 2, if person A was ranked 1, and got 92 in the hsc, while person B was ranked 2 and got 94 in the hsc, person A would get 92 exam mark and 94 assessment mark, averaging to 93, while person B would get 94 exam mark and 92 assessment mark, averaging to 93. So they both end up with the same mark!

I've also been told that hypothetically i'm coming second in economics with 90% and person B is comming first with 92%.
However, if i beat person B in the externals ill attain his greater internal mark.... True or false?

personally i think high internal rankings are impressive because you've been nail bitingly competiting with your other classmates through many assessments, assignments and practicals throughout your HSC year. Why should you be punished if you happen to stuff up a one day exam in Oct/Nov?

I dont think that is the case as the marks that your school submit to the board are well before the exams and thus you get a rank which correlates to the rank that you for you assesment mark.

The sentence above makes no sense but who cares.
