Hi ppls.. I'm just interested in a couple of things concerning conspiracy theories. Basically this is in regard to my 4u english major work, and at the moment I guess I would like to see what ppls opinions are;;

Okay, so I guess it would help if I put some qs down for this:

1. Why do u think there is so much interest into conspiracy theories? e.g. the popularity of the Da Vinci Code

2. Where did you first hear of conspiracy theories (such as the Da vinci code, 9/11, pentagon, moon landing scam) ? Please by specific

3. Are there any conspiracy theories that you do actually believe (in full or partially)? If so, why?

4. How seriously do you consider conspiracy theories? Are you immediately skeptical to any notion of conspiracies? Or do you treat them the same as do you do any other 'news'?

5. In general, do you support the idea of conspiracy theories or not? i.e. do you like the idea that such 'alternative' versions of the news are available and ppl are able to express their opinions in such a way?

Okay, thanks a lot!.. I guess you don't all to answer all the qs, but any of your considered opinions on this would be greatly appreciated !

some are real, some are not

we usually get them when we find a lack of information, so some people peice things together with theory. and then it turns out not so ....... well, we can have many explanations for what happend in at a ufo site...

like i said, some may be real. i cant think of any theories im into atm
but it doesnt have to be as drammatic as the ones u pointed out

u can have one for eg: oil traders in the US keeping oil prices high despite OPECs bid to bring them down! reason: they want more money@! :)

conspiracy theories are generally made by people who are desperate to get attention, cause trouble etc.

Conspiracy theories to prove correct itself is very difficult. Because generally (this conspieracy itself) it involves a more powerful source that often has quite a bit of control, like NASA, the american government and so on.

So far i havent seen a conspiracy theory invovling 'small powers', that because i believe they arent conspircau theories rather as frauds and so on.

But, generally i dont believe in them. Because as i stated before the trend is targetting major powers. so that itself is a bit sus.

A good example, is whether the americans were first to land on the moon, well quite clearly they are the leading the technoology in space now. We also know of Stalin's values, which well could have carries onto the cold war leaders. Thus perhaps they could have made themselves as though they were well ahead. Nevertheless, NASA was able to answer scientifically well enough to prove false of the conspiracy theories. Apparently the satelllite in canberra was the first receive the signal that appolla had landed.

But they are conspiracy theories that are actually true. Very few though. Conspiracy Theories can be seen as a tool of propaganda to turn people against large corporations.

In my words, simply put a conspiracy theory is an alternative explanation to an event. e.g. the moon landing. The general 'fact' is that NASA landed a spacecraft on the moon. The conspiracy theory of this event is that the moon landing never occured. Instead it was filmed in a studio and faked because America wanted to beat Russia in the 'moon race' and a list of other reasons.

The last question is considering conspiracy theories has an IDEA. i.e. I'm not asking if you support a particular conspiracy theory. Instead, what do you think in general of conspiracy theories? Do you support the idea that people can go off and create an alternative version of the 'news'? Or do you think people should be just content and completely accepting of the 'news' as it is?.. hope that clear it up

how do i get out of this

people love to feel that there is wrong in the world that is so subtle that it cannot be perceived by the uninformed eye. people who belive in conspiracy theories use it as a power base, they know something that very few others do therefore they are safe from the original power behind the conspiracy (as opposed to those who do no know or are uninformed)

the first conspiracy theory i ever heard of was the moon landing and how it was shot by stanley kubric in an attempt to beat the russians in the space race... i heard it on a expose doco show

yes i certainly believe that the boxing day tsunami was triggered by the usa in an attempt to take our minds off the iraqi crisis and to allow america to gain some face by coming to the rescue of asia and bringing aid. i believe this because i was in thailand a week before it happened and there were dodgy looking us officals walking around with paper documents which read "electro earthquake charges" failing that im sure that it was osama bin laden who has developed (quote tracks) "some bond villinish power"
no i dont believe in any... i only believe in conspiracy "facts"

immediately sceptical. they way such theories are always reported is sensationalist and exxagerated.

i support that people may have free opinions but i do not enjoy being preached too

1. Why do u think there is so much interest into conspiracy theories?
It makes one feel special, like one is of the chosen who know the Real Truth, and all the "sheep" who don't "know better" are inferior to the chosen. I believe it's basically an ego trip.

2. Where did you first hear of conspiracy theories (such as the Da vinci code, 9/11, pentagon, moon landing scam) ? Please by specific.
7 years old - School/Scripture, from a classmate. "The Bible isn't true!!" It's a big deal when you're 7 - most kids at that age are uber-religious.

3. Are there any conspiracy theories that you do actually believe (in full or partially)? If so, why?
Not in the sense of "alternative event"... Or even "big" things - ie. aliens - just some small things, which don't come under your definition. (This question needs rewording - do you think anyone will admit to it?)

I'll think about the other two..

I believe that's true, It's much like most radicalism. People who love noam chomsky usually fall into this category.

It's not a fukin ego trip, that sounds fukin stupid. People like them becasue they give an alterior view of things we already "know" like undercover info which twists the whole issue. Of course the government and ppl of high authority keep things away from the general public - and conspiracy theories just try and uncover the real "truth"

I can't beleive people who have such different political views (NTB and me) are in the same degree....

It's not an ego trip, knowing that you're one of the only ones who know "the *Real* truth", and if any other person doesn't know "the *Real* truth" they are automatically ignorant? To have a romanticised view of yourself as a vigilante/battler against Them, whomever They might be?
Some people get a thrill out of that in itself, rather than, as you suggest, being mentally stimulated by the complexities of the real event. Hence "ego trip". These vigilante-wannabe people can be distinguished by their ability to believe in anything and everything that is unconventional.

Conspiracy theories aren't trying to uncover the objective truth, they often simply attempt create 'truths' through fabrication, selection, and dissemination of evidence in a very bias way which is easily dismissed once you reveal their deceit for what it is.

Most humans are intuitive and curious. But for every conspiracy book published there are ten that counter it.

hey stargaze!! i was going to do this too!! but decided against it...

alright, here goes it.

1) because people like to imagine the mystique behind all happenings. particularly with celebrities (eg dianadeath) - it seems awful to think that something as mundane as a car crash could kill her, so it had to be an evil conspiracy. plus - it's just more interesting and fun.

2) after i heard about pearl harbour. then i got an insatiable interest and started looking them all up. after seeing oliver stone's JFK i got interested in the backdoor deals of politics again. oh - and after 9/11, our lawyer sent us the site for: www.whatreallyhappened.com - i found that rather interesting, too. probably stuff about how self-interest can govern our world - bit scary i admit.

3) pearl harbour - look how it benefitted the US to get involved in WWII!! JFK's assassination - that seems a bit fishy - and to an extent, the 9/11 theory. But not the moonwalk. to me that's sacred.

4) i treat them with interest and a grain of salt...and some of them with actual respect

5) yeah, you may have guessed by now that i like conspiracy theories - find 'em fascinating! even if they're not true, the whole idea of a dark shadowy mystery world that REALLY governs the world we live in is really cool (albeit evil). haha
