suppose u put forward an argument in an extended response, as u always do. is the point of related material to support ur argument? or could it also be used as a contrast? e.g. topic for discussion is "all journeys have a reward at the end". would it be:
a) interesting or
b) stupid
to include a piece of related material that contradicts this and recounts the negative aspects of a journey, such as death, injury, paralysation, depression etc, in addition to a second piece of related material that totally contradicts this and recalls the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow?

i've read in markers' guidelines that u should address issues from more than one dimension to make ur argument more interesting. but is a contrasting piece of related material a 2nd dimension, or does it just defeat ur argument?

no, its definately better 2 have contrast as well as comparison. just be careful with the way u do it. if one text comletely contradicts everything the other texts say, then there must be some provision for this in ur thesis. remember, a negative outcome 2 a journey doesnt necessarily negate the value of the journey - focusing on the importance of the journeying process may link texts together that have different outcomes.
