Hey

How come when i try to graph sqrt(2) cos(2x+pi/4) I can't simply draw sqrt(2) cos(2x) and shift the curve to the left by pi/4. I think the curve is being shifted to the left by pi/8 but I don't properly understand why.

You have to factorise out the 2 first. So it becomes √2cos2(x+pi/8), which is why it is shifted left pi/8 units.

(remember that c identifies the shift when it is f(x+c), so the coefficient of x needs to be made into 1 before shifting)
