I know that steel alloys can be corrosion resistant when you add certain metals to them, but WHY!?

because the metals added (ie. chromium to steel) are more resistant to corrossion (usually because they are inert more inert)

it depends on the reactivity of the metals that have been added

it is because the metals added to the alloy often form a passivating layer over the surface of the steel (e.g chromium, nickel). the best example of a passivating metal i can think of is aluminium (forms an aluminium oxide coating which creates high resistance to corrosion) however this is NOT used in the production of corrosion resistant steel alloys.
